Founded_in_2001,_as_a_response_to_the_need_for_an_interdisciplinary_understanding_of_issues_related_to_the_study_of_law_and_governance,_CSLG_owes_much_to_the_group_of_people_who_worked_extremely_hard_to_defend_the_idea_of_the_Centre_and_build_a_creative_institution._For_this_a_great_deal_of_credit_must_be_scripted_to_the_founding_Director_of_the_Centre,_Professor_Kuldeep_Mathur._ Initially,_five_faculty_members_were_recruited,_with_Professor_Pratap_Bhanu_Mehta_(of_the_Centre_of_Philosophy,_JNU)_holding_a_concurrent_appointment_at_the_Centre._This_team_initiated_a_Doctoral_Programme_of_Study,_and_a_teaching_programme_comprising_of_pre-doctoral_course_modules._It_also_held_a_series_of_wide-ranging_conversations,_with_colleagues_across_the_University,_as_it_designed_an_M.Phil._programme,_and_evolved_a_set_of_innovative_courses.
Looking_back_on_the_first_decade_of_the_Centre’s_existence,_the_faculty_acknowledges_the_contributions_of_its_founder-Director,_Professor_Kuldeep_Mathur,_and_other_colleagues,_Professor_Pratap_Bhanu_Mehta_(currently_President,_Centre_for_Policy_Research);_Professor_Nandini_Sundar_(now_at_the_Department_of_Sociology,_Delhi_School_of_Economics);_Dr._Ram_Singh_(now_at_the_Department_of_Economics,_Delhi_School_of_Economics);_Dr._Navroz_K._Dubash_(now_at_the_Centre_for_Policy_Research)_and_Dr._Jennifer_Jalal_(now_in_Canada).
Kuldeep_Mathur,_Professor_of_Political_Science_at_the_Jawaharlal_Nehru_University,_was_the_first_Academic_Director_of,_and_Concurrent_Professor_at_the_Centre_for_the_Study_of_Law_and_Governance_from_2000–03._He_was_also_Rector_of_the_University_(1993–94)_and_Director_of_the_National_Institute_of_Educational_Planning_and_Administration_(1994–97)._His_research_interests_encompass_Public_Policy_Processes,_Plans_and_Implementation,_Bureaucracy,_Administration_and_Decentralization._His_most_recent_publications_are_Public_Policy_and_Politics_in_India:_How_Institutions_Matter_(Oxford_University_Press,_2013),_Panchayati_Raj_(Oxford_India_Short_Introduction,_2013),_and_From_Government_to_Governance:_A_Brief_Survey_of_Indian_Experience_(National_Book_Trust,_2008).
