The_Centre_for_the_Study_of_Law_and_Governance_offers_an_MPhil/PhD_programme_as_well_as_a_doctoral_programme_of_study,_which_has_generated_enormous_interest_from_prospective_candidates,_whether_it_is_students_who_have_just_completed_their_Master’s_degrees_or_employed_professionals_and_officials._The_Centre’s_doctoral_programme_has_a_distinctive_student_profile,_which_includes_members_of_the_defence_and_civil_services,_lawyers,_teachers_and_people_working_with_civil_society_organisations.

The_programmes_of_study_offered_by_the_Centre_are_as_follows:

1._Doctoral_Programme_of_Study

    Given_its_inter-disciplinary_orientation,_the_Centre_welcomes_applications_from_scholars_with_M.Phil._degree_in_Political_Science,_Economics,_Sociology,_and_Law._Those_who_do_not_have_an_M.Phil._degree_should_provide_evidence_of_equivalent_published_work_in_the_intended_area_of_specialisation.
Eligibility_for_Admission:

Admission_to_the_doctoral_programme_of_study_is_made_through_a_viva_voce_examination._Only_those_candidates_are_considered_for_admission_to_the_Direct_Ph._D._Programme_as_have

    obtained_an_M.Phil_degree_of_a_recognized_University/Research_Institution_with_minimum_Final_Grade_Point_Average_(FGPA)_of_6.00_in_10_point_scale/comparable_standard_where_the_grading_is_based_on_system_other_than_10_point_scale._The_candidates_who_have_obtained_an_M.Phil._degree_from_a_University/Institution_where_the_dissertation_is_not_graded_or_grading_is_not_on_10-point_scale,_are_required_to_forward_a_copy_of_their_M.Phil._dissertation_along_with_the_Application_Form_for_the_purpose_of_assessment_of_their_credentials;  OR

    at_least_2_years_research/administrative/legal_experience_in_reputed_institutions_with_research_publication(s)_comparable_to_M.Phil._standard._In_addition,_they_should_have_obtained_Master’s_Degree_with_FGPA_of_6.00_in_the_10_point_scale/comparable_standard_or_equivalent_percentage.
2._MPhil/_PhD_Programme_in_Law_and_Governance

The_distinctive_features_of_the_M.Phil._Programme_are_its_multidisciplinary_orientation_in_both_course_design_and_teaching_plan;_its_substantive_academic_content;_its_distinctiveness_when_compared_to_available_courses_in_other_Indian_Universities;_and_its_coherence_as_a_programme_of_study_with_a_policy_orientation. 

The_objectives_of_the_M.Phil./Ph.D._Programme_in_Law_and_Governance_include_the_following:

    To_prepare_candidates_for_doctoral_research_in_public_policy_and_socio-legal_research_that_is_not_limited_by_uni-disciplinary_training. To_equip_students_with_the_skills_necessary_to_undertake_research_in_areas_of_public_policy,_including_a_special_focus_on_the_legal_implications_of_these_issues,_by_developing_their_expertise_in_these_diverse_disciplinary_areas,_and_so_to_enable_a_more_complex_and_multifaceted_approach_to_issues_of_governance,_public_policy_and_law. To_acquaint_the_qualified_practitioner_–_policy-maker,_civil_servant,_lawyer_or_civil_society_professional_–_with_the_major_issues_in_this_area.
The_M.Phil._programme_is_a_two-year_(four-semester)_programme_of_study_from_which_students_may_move_on_to_the_doctoral_programme_provided_they_meet_the_minimum_grade_requirements_laid_down_by_the_University._The_M.Phil._programme_consists_of_3_compulsory_courses;_3_optional_courses;_and_a_dissertation._Each_course_carries_3_credits,_and_the_course_requirements_are_to_be_completed_in_the_first_two_semesters_of_the_programme._The_dissertation_carries_10_credits_and_is_to_be_completed_by_the_end_of_the_fourth_semester._While_the_three_core_compulsory_courses_provide_a_general_overview_of_the_issues_and_debates_in_the_area_of_law_and_governance,_the_optional_courses_provide_the_students_with_the_opportunity_to_develop_a_specialization,_and_so_build_up_an_expertise_that_can_be_further_channelized_in_the_dissertation_work._Admission_to_the_M.Phil./PhD_Programme_is_by_an_entrance_examination_conducted_by_the_University,_followed_by_a_viva_voce_for_those_candidates_who_qualify_in_the_written_examination._The_eligibility_conditions_for_taking_the_examination_are_a_Master’s_degree_in_Political_Science,_Public_Administration,_Economics,_Sociology,_History,_Philosophy_or_Law_with_55%_marks;_or_60%_in_any_branch_of_natural_science._The_written_test_has_essay_type_questions_from_the_fields_of_Political_Science,_Public_Administration,_Sociology,_Economics,_and_Law._The_test_will_evaluate_the_candidate’s_analytical_abilities_and_competence_in_her/his_discipline._The_areas_covered_by_the_test_will_relate_to_issues_such_as_the_following:_the_changing_role_of_the_state;_the_relationship_between_the_state,_market_and_civil_society;_civil_service_reform_and_the_new_public_management;_regulatory_regimes;_local_governance,_both_rural_and_urban;_the_rule_of_law_and_access_to_justice;_the_social_and_economic_bases_of_law;_and_global_governance.
