p { font-size:14px; text-align:justify; line-height:_19px; margin-bottom:_10px_!important; } Established_in_1970,_this_School_now_has_the_largest_faculty_in_the_university._From_the_beginning_an_attempt_has_been_made_here_to_dismantle_the_narrow_disciplinary_compartments_found_in_traditional_academic_structures,_and_this_objective_can_be_seen_reflected_even_in_the_unusual_appointment_pattern._Thus,_one_may_find_a_linguist_or_an_anthropologist_in_the_Centre_for_Historical_Studies;_or_a_demographer_and_an_economist_along_with_geologists_or_geographers_in_the_Centre_for_the_Study_of_Regional_Development;_an_economist,_a_psychologist,_a_sociologist_and_a_historian_in_the_Centre_for_Educational_Studies._.The_M.A._programmes_are_relatively_discipline_oriented,_but_the_students_are_encouraged_to_offer_some_courses_in_the_other_Centres_as_well._At_the_research_level_the_interdisciplinary_thrust_of_the_School_comes_to_the_fore._Innovation_in_course_contents_as_well_as_in_the_directions_of_research_testify_to_the_achievements_of_the_School.In_recognition_of_the_valuable_work_done_by_them_many_centres_within_the_School_have_been_recognised_by_the_U.G.C._as_advanced_centres_for_research_under_their_Special_Assistance_Programme_(DSA). The_centres_which_are_managing_DSA_programmes_are_Centre_for_Economic_Studies_and_Planning,_Centre_for_Historical_Studies,_Centre_for_the_Study_of_Regional_Development,_Centre_for_the_Study_of_Social_Systems_and_Zakir_Husain_Centre_for_Educational_Studies._The_underlying_philosophy_that_guided_the_evolution_of_initial_structure_of_the_School_was_based_on_the_view_that_for_a_proper_understanding_of_social_reality,_an_inter-disciplinary_approach_to_the_study_of_social_sciences_was_imperative._It_is_in_pursuit_of_this_objective_that_the_academic_programmes_of_centres_within_the_School_and_their_faculty_composition_do_not_exactly_conform_to_the_conventional_department_wise_structure_which_one_comes_across_most_of_the_other_Indian_universities. Teaching_at_the_M.A._level_is,_to_a_considerable_extent_,_discipline_oriented,_aiming_at_ensuring_proficiency_of_students_in_the_basic_knowledge_and_analytical_methods_employed_in_the_various_social_science_disciplines.The_research_level_programmes,_namely_the_students'_theses,_course_component_of_the_M.Phil/Ph.D._programmes,_the_faculty_project_profile_and_individual_research,_are_much_more_inter-disciplinary._The_extent_of_this_inter-disciplinary_element_varies_from_centre_to_centre,_and_depending_upon_the_nature.of_the_discipline_concerned,_conceptual_framework_of_teaching_and_research_programmes_of_different_it_centres.For_example,_some_Centre_such_as_Centre_for_the_Study_of_Regional_Development,_Zakir_Hussain_Centre_for_Educational_Studies_and_Centre_for_Social_Medicine_and_Community_Health,_have_a_fairly_large_representation_of_two_or_more_disciplines_amongst_its_faculty,_while_the_others_are_relatively_more_specialised._Moreover_not_all_the_centres_of_the_school_run_M.A._Programmes.Those_centres_which_run_M.A._level_programmes_naturally_impart_a_high_dose_of_discipline_based_knowledge,_although_even_here,_the_students_are_encouraged_to_take_some_courses_outside_their_own_centre,_and_sometimes_outside_the_School_of_Social_Sciences_as_well._The_five_disciplines_in_which_M.A._level_instruction_is_imparted_in_the_School_are_Economics,_History,_Political_Science,_Geography_and_Sociology. These_M.A._level_programmes_are_located_in_the_Centre_for_Economic_Studies_and_Planning,_Centre_for_Historical_Studies,_Centre_for_Political_Studies,_Centre_for_the_Study_of_Regional_Development_and_Centre_for_the_Study_of_Social_Systems._Total_admissions_offered_at_the_M.A._and_the_M.Phil/Ph.D_level_programmes_within_the_School_have_increased_substantially_since_the_early_years_of_the_School_in_the_beginning_of_nineteen_seventies. The_admission_process_to_all_the_programmes_takes_place_through_a_Competitive_Admissions_Examination._Keeping_in_view_the_All_India_character_of_this_University,_laid_its_objective_of_providing_an_easy_access_to_students_from_all_parts_of_India,_the_admission_test_is_held_in_thirty_nine_centres_located_in_the_State_capitals_and_a_few_other_important_towns.
