Courses_offered_in_Winter_Semester_2026 Centre_for_Women's_Studies_(CWS),_JNU,_seeks_to_study_questions_of_gender_in_an_interdisciplinary_and_comparative_framework,_thereby_providing_the_space_for_creating_a_vibrant_community_of_feminist_academics,_students,_activists_and_artists_concerned_with_issues_of_gender,_sexuality_and_wider_issues_of_power_in_society._Women's_Studies_in_India_emerged_out_of_the_conjunction_of_such_diverse_forces_as_the_women's_and_democratic_struggles,_as_well_as_state_initiatives_that_critically_examined_the_status_of_women_in_the_country._The_past_three_decades_have_witnessed_the_influence_of_these_trends_within_academia,_leading_to_path_breaking_feminist_research_in_different_disciplines,_particularly_in_the_social_sciences_and_humanities._The_growth_of_Women's_Studies_Centres/_Programmes_in_different_Universities_(and_some_autonomous_research_institutions),_all_over_the_country_has_demonstrated_recognition_of_the_issues_that_have_been_highlighted_by_the_women's_movement_and_feminist_research_over_the_past_many_years..History:_The_Centre_was_launched_in_2000_when_Prof._Utsa_Patnaik,_the_then_Dean,_along_with_Prof._Zoya_Hasan_and_others_established_the_Women’s_Studies_Programme_(WSP)_with_UGC_funding_in_the_School_of_Social_Sciences._The_Programme,_an_integral_part_of_the_School_of_Social_Sciences,_was_conceived_of_as_a_distinct_space_for_engaging_questions_relating_to_women_and_gender,_both_in_teaching,_and_research._In_addition_to_faculty_members,_WSP_has_had,_until_2013,_a_Professor_of_the_School_appointed_as_its_Director_on_a_rotational_basis,_to_co-ordinate_the_overall_functioning_of_the_Programme._Professors_Zoya_Hasan_(CPS),_Jayati_Ghosh_(CESP),_Tanika_Sarkar_(CHS),_Maitrayee_Chaudhuri_(CSSS),_Saraswati_Raju_(CSRD),_and_Kumkum_Roy_(CHS)_have_all_been_associated_with_the_Programme_as_its_Directors_and_have_helped_to_give_it_a_distinctive,_interdisciplinary,_character._In_2013,_once_the_WSP_became_a_full_Centre_of_the_School_of_Social_Sciences,_Prof._Shefali_Jha_(CPS)_was_appointed_as_its_first_Chairperson._The_CWS_currently_has_five_faculty_members_and_is_in_the_process_of_expansion._Click_for_more....
