Synopsis:_147_workers_of_India’s_biggest_automobile_manufacturing_company_Maruti_Suzuki_are_on_trial_for_the_murder_of_a_senior_manager_and_2500_workers_dismissed._It_has_been_two_and_a_half_years_and_the_case_drags_on._Their_bail_application_has_been_rejected_by_the_courts._On_each_hearing_they_are_led_to_the_court_room_by_the_police_while_families_line_up_to_catch_a_glimpse._The_defense_lawyers_plan_their_strategy_in_the_court_canteen._Justice_seems_a_dim_hope._The_film_follows_the_fate_of_the_under_trial_workers,_families_and_dismissed_workers_to_investigate_the_underbelly_of_industrial_conflict_and_the_elusive_nature_of_justice.

About_the_Director:_Rahul_Roy’s_films_have_travelled_across_the_globe_to_various_documentary_film_festivals_and_have_won_several_prestigious_awards._His_films_explore_the_themes_of_masculinity_and_gender_relations_against_the_larger_background_of_communalism,_labour,_class_identities_and_urban_spaces._Besides_film_making_Roy_has_been_researching_and_writing_on_masculinities._His_graphic_book_on_masculinities_titled_‘A_Little_Book_on_Men’_was_recently_published_by_Yoda_Press.

The_Himmat_Workshops 

Participants:_Shah_Jehan_Shaikh,_Rabia_Shaikh,_Taslim_Qureshi,_Tahera_Pathan,_Farzana_Shaikh,_Rehana_Shaikh_Co-ordinated_by_VasudhaThozhur

Himmat_is_a_collective_formed_by_the_widows_of_Naroda_Patia,_with_the_help_of_Monica_Wahi_and_Zaid_Ahmed_Sheikh._The_project_was_possible_due_to_the_infrastructure_that_it_provided. This_art_project_involved_working_with_six_adolescent_girls_who_lost_several_members_of_their_families_in_the_carnage_at_Naroda_Patiya,_Ahmedabad,_on_the_28thof_Feb._2002._It_examines_the_role_that_art_practices_can_play_in_a_collective_trauma_and_addresses_a_range_of_issues_from_personal_loss_to_displacement_and_the_possibility_of_mobilization_and_economic_revival_through_the_use_of_the_visual_language._In_terms_of_methodology,_the_focus_was_on_process_rather_than_a_pre-determined_outcome,_and_further_the_recording_of_the_process_through_writing,_painting_and_the_digital_media,_as_an_archive_against_forgetting,_and_the_creation_of_a_context-specific_resource._The_first_phase_(2002-2008)_of_the_project_involved_primarily_fieldwork,_and_the_community_speaks_for_itself_through_the_work_produced._The_second_phase_of_the_project_(2009-2012)_includes_my_paintings,_mostly_done_in_retrospect.

The_exhibit_focuses_on_building_an_understanding,_and_the_message,_at_its_most_basic,_is_about_friendship._It_could_be_considered_as_a_working_model_through_which_a_range_of_skills_are_acquired_along_with_political_awareness_and_the_possibility_of_resistance,_intervention_and_change_through_creative_means.

The_idea_of_working_with_display_as_a_narrative_mode_is_central_to_the_curation/exhibition._A_project_that_had_functioned_actively_within_the_community_as_a_locus_for_mobilization_and_creative_process_is_transformed_into_an_artwork_–_art_that_enters_the_area_of_display_could_in_that_sense,_be_seen_as_an_afterlife,_but_almost_always_is_also_a_presage_of_things_to_come.

VasudhaThozhur VasudhaThozhur_was_born_in_1956_in_Mysore._She_studied_at_the_College_of_Arts_and_Crafts,_Madras,_and_at_the_School_of_Art_and_Design_inCroydon,_UK._She_lived_and_worked_in_Chennai_between_1981_–_1997_and_in_Baroda_between_1997_–_2013._Besides_participation_in_exhibitions/workshops_in_the_country_and_abroad,_institutional_work_has_involved_lectures/teaching/juries_at_MS_University,_Baroda,_NID,_Ahmedabad_and_IICD_Jaipur.Two_grants_from_the_India_Foundation_for_the_Arts,_Bangalore,_between_2002_–_2006_and_2009_–_2011,_supported_a_research_project,_'The_Himmat_Workshops'._The_project_looked_at_ways_of_rooting_art_practice_in_ground_and_other_realities_as_experienced_in_the_country,_with_particular_reference_to_conflict_zones._It_involved_collaborating_with_Himmat,_an_activist_organization_based_in_Vatva,_Ahmedabad,_between_2002_–_2012._Among_grants_received_earlier_are_the_French_Government_Scholarship_to_work_at_the_Cite_des_Arts_and_the_Charles_Wallace_Grant_to_work_at_Gasworks,_London_._She_is_currently_Associate_Professor_in_the_Department_of_Art,_Design_and_Performing_Arts_at_Shiv_Nadar_University,_Dadri.Other_interests_include_writing_and_music.

From_being_a_colourless_functionary_who_labored_anonymously_behind_the_scenes_at_the_museum,_today_the_curator_has_become_a_key_figure_in_the_art_scene,_invested_with_power,_glamour_and_a_near-oracular_authority._How_did_this_transformation_come_about?_What_has_the_emergence_of_the_new_curator_done_to_the_way_we_see_and_think_about_art?_What_does_the_figure_of_the_curator_embody,_and_what_is_its_relationship_with_other_figures,_such_as_collectors,_critics,_historians_and_impresarios,_whose_powers_the_curator_seems_to_have_absorbed,_and_in_some_measure,_seems_to_have_displaced?_How_shall_we_see_the_rise_of_the_star-curator_in_relation_to_the_increasing_importance_of_exhibition-as-spectacle_–_requiring_the_collaboration_with_architects,_exhibition_designers,_marketing_and_publicity_departments,_as_well_as_new_kinds_of_pedagogy_and_new_definitions_of_the_public?

MENSPOTTING  A_Festival_of_Documentaries_on_Masculinities 

Documentaries_are_often_described_as_reality_films._But_reality_as_we_know_is_slippery,_forever_near_and_forever_far._And_probably_nothing_proves_this_more_than_the_troubled_area_of_representation_of_men_and_masculinities_in_documentaries._Why_is_it_that_we_look_at_men_in_documentaries_but_we_don't_really_see_them_as_'men'?_Or_let's_put_it_in_another_way,_why_is_it_easy_to_understand_what_we_mean_when_we_say_'films_on_women'_and_get_quizzical_looks_if_we_were_to_say_'films_on_men'.

This_festival_of_documentaries_attempts_to_intervene_in_this_space_of_presence_and_absence_to_induce_a_gaze_that_unravels_the_many_realities_of_men_and_masculinities_through_filmic_journeys_inside_homes,_work_sites,_youthful_yearnings,_race,_sexuality_and_labour._The_films_take_us_inside_the_world_of_boys_and_men_to_reveal_the_complexity_and_contradictions_within_the_world_of_masculinities._They_invite_us_to_look_at_masculinities_as_an_intricate_system_of_distribution_of_privileges_and_the_insecurities_and_instability_of_a_world_that_is_constantly_on_the_verge_of_being_undone.
