Time_Table_for_1st_yr_M.A._Courses_-_Monsoon_Semester_2025 Time_Table_for_2nd_yr_M.A._Courses_-_Monsoon_Semester_2025 The_School_of_Arts_and_Aesthetics_offers_post-graduate_degree_courses_in_the_theoretical_and_critical_study_of_cinema,_and_the_visual_and_performing_arts._It_is_one_of_the_few_places_in_India_where_these_disciplines_are_offered_in_one_integrated_programme_at_the_Masters_level._The_School's_M.Phil_programme_offers_a_specialized_focus_in_each_of_the_three_disciplines_viz._Cinema_Studies,_Theatre_and_Performance_Studies,_and_Art_History_and_Visual_Studies. The_study_of_the_arts_in_recent_years_has_been_enriched_by_methods_and_insights_from_many_fields,_such_as_sociology,_anthropology,_linguistics,_cultural_studies,_political_science,_economic_history,_semiotics_and_feminist_studies._The_School’s_outlook_has_been_formulated_in_response_to_new_ways_of_thinking_about_culture_using_a_wide_array_of_critical_and_theoretical_approaches._During_the_course_of_their_studies,_students_are_introduced_to_a_range_of_research_methods_that_combine_archival,_ethnographic,_theoretical_and_cultural_approaches_and_are_encouraged_to_create_theory-practice_interface._The_faculty_also_encourages_students_to_visit_museums,_exhibitions,_and_monuments_and_to_attend_festivals_of_theatre,_film,_dance _and_music._The_school_frequently_hosts_interactive_sessions_with_eminent_scholars_and_practitioners_from_within_the_country_as_well_as_from_overseas. The_Visual_Studies_courses_address_“high”_art_forms_(the_domain_of_the_discipline_of_art_history)_as_well_as_the_larger_visual_field_of_popular_culture_and_visual_practices._The_majority_of_visual_studies_courses_encourage_a_critical_engagement_with_aspects_of_Indian_visual_culture_(including_shastric_and_aesthetic_theories_of_Indian_art,_ancient_sculpture,_medieval_temple_architecture,_Mughal_and_Rajput_painting,_19th_and_20th_century_popular_culture,_modern_and_contemporary_art_in_India_and_elsewhere)_in_the_light_of_cutting-edge_research_and_theoretical_developments_in_art_history,_visual_studies,_history,_literary_theory,_philosophy,_aesthetics_and_sociology._Theoretically-oriented_and_cross-cultural_courses_take_up_issues_such_as_the_relationship_between_methods,_materials_and_meanings_in_art,_narrative_strategies_in_art,_and_the_history_and_politics_of_art_institutions,_particularly_museums,_in_the_creation_of_canons_of_art. Theatre_and_Performance_Studies_offers_a_diverse_spectrum_of_courses_covering_the_history,_theory_and_practice_of_theatre,_dance,_music_and_performance,_both_within_India_and_across_the_world._Introductory_courses_are_offered_alongside_a_wide_range_of_optional_courses_in_music_and_dance._Covering_a_vast_timeframe_from_‘living_traditions’_of_rural_performances_in_India_and_bhakti_to_the_cutting-edge_developments_in_political_theatre,_gender,_globalization,_and_performance_art,_the_Department_is_committed_to_studying_theatre_and_performance_both_within_established_traditions_of_the_stage,_as_well_as_in_relation_to_the_immediacies_and_contradictions_of_public_culture_at_national_and_global_levels. The_Cinema_Studies_course_position_the_moving_image_as_a_force_inhabiting_a_multi-media environment_that_includes film, television,_video,_and_digital_cultures._While film,_as_a_powerful_experience_of_20th century_modernity,_continues_to_be_an_important_scholarly_focus,_we_also_see_it_as_a_gateway_to_a_broader_field_of_the_moving_image_complex._Our_courses_are_structured_to_offer_students_exposure_to_a_wide_range_of_issues_such_as_the_sensory_experience_of_moving_image_technologies;_the_stylistic_and_aesthetic_dimension_of_diverse media forms;_the_political_and_cultural_evaluation_of_audio-visual_representations;_and_the_infrastructures_of media production,_circulation,_and_exhibition._Students_are_encouraged_to_think_conceptually_and_critically_about_global media cultures_along_with_a_special_focus_on_India. The_School_has_a_strong_research_profile_that_informs_its_teaching._Their_innovative_courses_attract_students_from_disciplines_like_art_history,_architecture,_literature_and_the_social_sciences_on_the_one_hand_and_cinema_and_performance_practitioners_on_the_other_hand_who_wish_to_engage_with_the_theoretical_and_historical_context_of_the_arts._Its_teaching_fulfils_research_and_employment_needs_within_the_wider_domain_of_culture,_media,_Indian_heritage_and_the_arts.
