The_Central_Instrumentation_Facility

The_

Central_Instrument_Facility_(CIF)

_constitutes_the_heart_of_the_cooperative_research_activities_at_the_School_set_up_from_the_University_resources_and_assisted_by_UGC_COSIST_and_DSA_(SAP)_supports.

This_facility_houses_some_hundred_odd_sophisticated_specialized_equipment_for_research_works_of_students_and_the_faculty._The_CIF_remains_open_24_hrs_a_day_through_out_the_year.

Besides_the_SLS,_the_users_of_this_unique_facility_are_the_researchers_from_other_Schools_and_Centers_of_the_University_as_well_as_from_other_Universities_and_Institutes_in_Delhi_and_other_parts_of_the_country._Under_UGC_University_link_activities_the_CIF_facilities_are_permitted_to_researchers_to_carry_out_their_short-term_projects_under_the_guidance_and_cooperation_of_SLS_faculty_and_School’s_technical_staff.

The_Teaching_Instrument_Facility

The_School_has_from_the_very_inception,_placed_importance_on_the_laboratory_works_by_the_students_at_M.Sc._level.

The_laboratory_credits_constitute_a_major_proportion_of_M.Sc._course_structure._In_order_to_provide_opportunities_to_students_to_develop_experimental_skills,_the_School_has_set_up_a_Central_Teaching_Laboratory_Facility_that_houses_both_indigenous_and_imported_equipments_that_are_dedicated_for_use_by_M.Sc._students_for_their_laboratory_exercises_and_independent_group_projects.

The_Photographic_Facility

This_facility_at_the_School_effectively_caters_not_only_to_the_needs_of_the_School,_but_also_helps_other_members_of_the_university_and_institutions_located_on_the_campus._Specialized_services_available_in_the_photographic_unit_include_both_color_and_black_and_white_photography,_preparation_of_slides,_preparation_of_scientific_artwork._The_unit_has_facilities_for_taking_of_photographs_of_a_variety_of_biological_and_scientific_material_including_tissue_culture,_plant_and_microbial_material,_all_types_of_electrophoresis_gels,_and_autoradiograms.

The_Computer,_E-mail_and_Internet_Facility

The_School_has_set_up_facilities_for_in-house_use_of_computers,_E.mail_and_internet_services_for_the_students,_project_staffs_and_the_faculty._This_unit_provides_a_variety_of_services_to_the_students_in_literature_search,_computation_and_graphics

The_Glass_Blowing_Unit

This_unit_at_SLS_serves_the_need_of_designing_small_apparatus,_glass_joints_and_chromatography_columns_etc._First_semester_M.Sc._students_are_allowed_to_learn_simple_glass_blowing_skills_using_this_facility._This_glass_blowing_unit_is_the_only_one_of_its_kind_in_the_University.

Library

A_departmental_library_has_recently_been_started_in_SLS._This_facility_has_been_opened_to_provide_the_students_textbooks,_selected_periodicals_and_reading_materials_during_working_hours._The_School_plans_on_further_developing_this_unit_and_initiate_a_book_loan_system_for_needy_students.

The_Experimental_Botanical_Garden

The_Botanical_Garden_at_SLS_is_used_by_Ph.D._students_and_faculty_at_SLS,_SES_&_CBT_for_growing_plants_for_use_in_their_experiments.

Central_Laboratory_Animal_Resources_(CLAR)

The_Jawaharlal_Nehru_University_Animal_House_is_situated_in_the_south_corner_of_the_campus_adjacent_to_the_post_office._The_nomenclature_of_Animal_House_was_changed_to_the_"Central_Laboratory_Animal_Resources"_(CLAR)._The_Central_Laboratory_Animal_Resources_(CLAR)_was_established_in_the_year_1980-81._The_facility_is_registered_under_Committee_for_Control_and_Supervision_of_Experiments_on_Animals_(CCSEA),_Ministry_of_Fisheries,_Animal_Husbandry_and_Dairying_Governemnt_of_India_(Reg._No_19/1999_CCSEA)_which_provide_professional_and_technical_services_for_the_Animal_research_Project,_awarded_by_different_scientific_funding_agencies_to_the_faculty_and_students_of_various_science_schools_and_centers_in_JNU._CLAR_to_ensure_humane_care_to_the_animals_and_their_use,_necessary_for_the_pursuit_and_achievement_of_scientific_excellence_and_is_build_and_maintained_strictly_in_accordance_to_the_CCSEA_guidelines_and_ Institutional_Animal_Ethics_Committee_(IAEC)_of_JNU._Different_species_and_strains_are_kept_separately_in_animal_rooms_maintained_under_standard_room_temperature_of_22o_to_25o_C,_50-55%_relative_humidity,_12:12_hour_light_and_dark_cycle_with_100%_fresh_air_circulation_and_uninterrupted_power_and_water_supply._CLAR_facility_is_looked_after_by_a_full_time_well_qualified_Sr._Veterinary_officer_led_by_a_team_of_Technical_Assistants_and_animal_caretakers_well_experienced_and_trained_in_animal_care,_breeding_and_husbandry._All_the_procedures_directed_by_the CLAR_Advisory_Committee_in_order_to_keep_the_CLAR_hygienic_and_infection_free_are_routinely_followed_strictly_by_the_staff_under_the_guidance_of_Sr._Veterinary_officer._The_Nude_Mice_facility_has_been_made_functional_and_the_Nude_Mice_strain_are_available_for_research_purposes.
