Since_the_inception_of_the_erstwhile_Indian_School_of_International_Studies_(ISIS)_in_1955,_the_School_of_International_Studies_(SIS)_is_the_oldest_school_of_the_varsity._Almost_six_decades_of_its_existence,_the_School_has_established_itself_as_one_of_the_premier_institutions_in_the_country_for_the_study_of_international_relations_and_area_studies.

 

The_Centre_for_South_Asian_Studies_is_one_of_the_oldest_centres_of_the_School_of_International_Studies,_Jawaharlal_Nehru_University_(JNU),_New_Delhi,_India._The_importance_of_the_centre_is_self-evident_by_the_fact_that_it_lies_in_the_South_Asian_region._The_centre_has_the_privilege_of_having_widely_known_faculty_members._The_centre_also_has_directly_participated_in_the_foreign_policy-making_exercise_in_the_country._The_centre_has_organised_a_range_of_national_and_international_seminars,_round_tables,_symposia_and_workshops_with_regional_and_international_experts,_policymakers,_academicians_and_civil_society_members.

 

The_centre_has_hosted_and_conducted_projects_for_various_Ministries,_Indian_Council_for_Social_Science_Research,_University_Grants_Commission,_Asian_Development_Bank,_Ford_Foundation,_International_Development_Research_Centre,_Regional_Centre_for_Strategic_Studies,_USAID,_United_Nations_High_Commissioner_for_Refugees,_UNESCAP_and_many_other_national_and_international_bodies.

 

The_Centre_for_South_Asian_Studies_conducts_research_on_a_range_of_aspects_of_eight_South_Asian_countries._All_the_academic_activities_including_teaching_and_interdisciplinary_research_have_been_designed_to_objectively_study_and_analyse_history,_politics,_foreign_policy,_security,_societies,_economies,_environment,_regional_cooperation/integration_and_contemporary_affairs_in_different_regions/countries_covered_by_the_Centre._The_Centre_has_focused_on_academic_pursuits_that_have_intellectual_value,_social_relevance_and_broader_national_and_international_efficacies_and_policy_dynamics._Its_programme_of_studies_has_attracted_bright_students_having_diverse_background_from_various_parts_of_India_and_other_countries._It_has_evolved_into_a_full-fledged_institute_of_academic_excellence,_much_admired_by_students,_frequently_consulted_by_the_national_governments_and_eagerly_sought_after_by_international_organisations_and_other_academic_institutions.

 

The_profile_of_the_students_who_have_completed_their_studies_from_the_Centre_does_show_that_a_large_number_of_them_have_joined_premier_academic_and_research_institutions_and_equally_credible_numbers_are_in_the_national_and_state_civil_services._Many_of_the_students_have_done_exceedingly_well_in_media_and_non-governmental_organisations,_other_tertiary_sector_activities_and_national_and_regional_politics._The_importance_of_the_Centre_has_become_more_critical_and_vital_both_in_the_context_of_large_scale_transformation_in_the_global_scenario_and_also_within_the_countries_that_have_been_traditionally_covered_and_studied_by_the_Centre._There_are_immense_opportunities_for_academic_inquiry_triggered_by_these_new_developments.

 

All_the_academic_activities_including_teaching_and_interdisciplinary_research_have_been_designed_to_study_objectively_and_analyse_history,_politics,_foreign_policy,_security,_societies,_economies,_environment,_regional_cooperation/integration_and_contemporary_affairs_in_different_regions/countries_covered_by_the_Centre.

With_a_set_of_very_well-known_faculty_members_and_over_100_students_from_both_India_and_foreign_countries,_the_Centre_has_evolved_and_developed_into_a_full-fledged_institute_of_academic_excellence,_much_admired_by_students,_frequently_consulted_by_the_national_government_and_eagerly_sought_after_by_international_organisations_and_other_academic_institutions. 

 

From_time_to_time_the_Centre_also_had_eminent_Visiting_Professors,_Visiting_Fellows_and_Post-Doctoral_Fellows,_Faculty_members_have_extensively_written_in_both_national_and_international_journals,_published_books_and_reports_from_reputed_publishers,_actively_participated_in_seminars,_delivered_lectures_in_the_prestigious_forum_and_have_brought_laurels_to_the_University_and_the_nation._Faculty_members_have_also_been_in_various_governmental_bodies_and_delegations_and_have_been_specialists_such_as_Prof._Bimal_Prasad,_Prof._Mohammad_Ayoob,_Prof._Vishal_Singh,_Prof._Parimal_Kumar_Das,_Prof._Muchkund_Dubey,_Prof._Kalim_Bahadur,_Prof._S.D._Muni,_Late_Prof._L.S._Baral,_late_Prof._Urmila_Phadnis_and_late_Prof._Ram_Rahul,_late_Prof._Dawa_Norbu_have_been_associated_with_this_Centre_in_the_past._The_Centre_has_had_the_unique_distinction_of_having_three_Ambassadors_of_India_to_Nepal,_Laos_and_Trinidad_and_Tobago_during_the_past_three_decades._Many_of_the_faculty_members_have_become_Vice-Chancellors_and_other_high_officials_in_University_and_Government_Institutions.

New_Developments_

The_importance_of_the_Centre_has_become_more_critical_and_vital_both_in_the_context_of_large_scale_transformation_in_the_global_scenario_and_also_within_the_countries_that_have_been_traditionally_covered_and_studied_by_the_Centre._The_newer_issues_have_emerged,_and_a_range_of_new_actors_and_a_large_number_of_institutions_have_germinated_and_gained_prominence._The_traditional_matrices_have_become_more_complex._There_are_immense_opportunities_for_academic_inquiry_triggered_by_these_new_developments._For_a_country_like_India_which_is_of_crucial_importance_both_in_its_foreign_policy_conduct_and_in_its_endeavour_to_achieve_the_larger_goal_of_becoming_a_major_global_player._Many_of_the_issues_require_unconventional_treatment_to_examine_them_in_a_consistent_and_protracted_manner._Some_of_them_required_non-traditional_techniques_of_research,_newer_tools_and_instruments_of_analysis_and_still_many_of_them_call_for_an_entirely_new_set_of_training_and_orientation_both_the_faculty_and_students_alike.

 

This_is,_therefore,_a_very_crucial_juncture_for_the_Centre_and_its_academic_programmes._The_Centre_has_been_able_to_catch_up_with_these_changes_in_a_more_comprehensive_manner_than_we_expected._However,_in_order_to_provide_consistent_and_academic_treatment_to_the_entire_spectrum_of_issues_that_have_emerged_both_at_the_regional_and_national_levels_of_the_countries_concerned,_the_Centre_is_being_steadily_restructured,_re-empowered_and_to_a_large_extent_reoriented._The_faculty_members_and_the_students_are_committed_to_undertake_measures_that_would_provide_the_Centre_and_the_University_at_large_a_profile_of_most_attractive_resourceful_and_competitive_Centre_of_academic_excellence.
