AREA_II_(Environmental_Geosciences)_focuses_on_research_initiatives_covering_different_aspects_of_Earth_System_Sciences_and_their_implications_on_the_natural_and_human-made_environments._The_research_activities_in_Area-II_align_with_the_2030_Agenda_of_Sustainable_Development_Goals,_viz._Goal_3:_Good_Health_and_Well-being,_Goal_6:_Clean_Water_and_Sanitation;_Goal_7:_Affordable_and_Clean_Energy;_Goal_11:_Sustainable_Cities_and_Communities;_Goal_12:_Responsible_Consumption_and_Production;_Goal_13:_Climate_Action;_Goal_14:_Life_below_Water_and_Goal_5:_Life_on_land.  Major_thrust_areas_of_research_in_Area-II_emphasize_integrated_approaches,_i.e.,_investigating_geological,_geophysical,_and_geochemical_processes_in_terrestrial_and_aquatic_systems._Unraveling_the_origin_and_evolution_of_Indian_cratons_and_surrounding_continental_margins_by_integrating_field_observations_and_cutting-edge_experimental_techniques._Since_SES_is_a_pioneer_in_Environmental_geochemistry_and_biogeochemical_research,_the_Ministry_of_Environment,_Forest_and_Climate_Change_(MOEFCC),_Government_of_India,_has_granted_the_EICAP_program_centre_at_SES_under_the_Geodiversity_and_Impact_on_Environment_theme.  Scientific_endeavor_of_Area_II_faculty_highlights_the_following_key_environmental_aspects: 
  • *_Water_resource_assessment_and_management_for_sustainable_development_in_the_context_of_a_changing_climate,_water/seawater_pollution_(geogenic_and_anthropogenic)_and_human_health_risks._Such_studies_emphasize_hydro_geochemical_processes_and_the_impact_of_urbanization,_agriculture,_domestic_and_industry_on_water_resource_management.

  • *_Oceanography_and_Geophysical_Exploration_offering_insights_into_tectonics-climate_linkages_on_various_scales._Potential_marine_(both_renewable_and_non-renewable)_resources,_contributing_to_the_climate_resilience_and_coastal_zone_management_under_the_ambits_of_the_United_Nations_Convention_on_the_Law_of_the_Sea_(UNCLOS).

  • *_Research_on_Indian_cratons_emphasizing_mineralization_processes_crucial_for_the_identification_of_metallogenic_provinces._Investigations_about_critical_minerals_(such_as_lithium,_nickel,_PGE,_REEs,_graphite,_and_vanadium_etc.)_in_the_Precambrian_terranes_are_crucial_for_sustainable_resource_development_in_the_country.

With_these_multidisciplinary_efforts_and_integrated_geoscientific_approaches,_the_SES_has_been_recognized_as_a_leading_national_hub_for_sustainability_and_policy-oriented_research_in_the_Earth_sciences.
