AREA_III_(Environmental_Chemistry)_explores_the_influence_of_chemicals_on_the_atmosphere,_hydrosphere,_and_lithosphere,_and_their_repercussions_on_both_the_environment_and_human_well-being._Environmental_chemists_frequently_find_themselves_in_a_more_visible_role,_as_their_research_plays_a_crucial_part_in_shaping_decisions_that_impact_the_entire_population._This_interdisciplinary_Area_III_resides_at_the_intersection_of_key_scientific_disciplines,_with_a_central_focus_on_air,_water_and_soil._In_2015,_all_UN_member_states_adopted_the_2030_Agenda_for_Sustainable_Development,_a_15-year_plan_aimed_at_achieving_its_goals._Many_of_these_goals_align_with_the_research_activities_of_Area_III,_especially_Goal_6:_Clean_Water_and_Sanitation;_Goal_13:_Climate_Action;_and_Goal_2:_Zero_Hunger._Several_others_are_also_interconnected,_including_Goal_3:_Good_Health_and_Well-being,_Goal_7:_Affordable_and_Clean_Energy_and_Goal_11:_Sustainable_cities_and_communities._AREA_III_research_endeavors_are_actively_contributing_to_various_national_programs_including_Namami_Gange,_Make_in_India,_Swastha_Bharat,_Skill_India,_Smart_Cities,_Unnat_Bharat,_AatmaNirbhar_Bharat,_and_Swachh_Bharat. Currently,_there_are_ongoing_efforts_to_study_and_research_the_monitoring,_assessment,_and_modeling_of_emerging_(organic_and_inorganic)_contaminants_in_various_environments_including_groundwater,_surface_water_(lakes,_rivers,_wetlands,_reservoirs,_and_streams),_industrial_effluents,_wastewater_treatment_plants_(influents_and_effluents),_as_well_as_soils_and_sludges._The_central_focus_of_this_domain_revolves_around_the_development_of_sustainable_technologies_for_remediating_aquatic_contaminants,_including_arsenic,_fluoride,_nitrate,_pesticides,_oils,_pharmaceuticals,_oxyanion_species,_Per-/Polyfluoro_Alkyl_Substances_(PFAS)_“Forever”_Chemicals,_and_microplastics._Additionally,_it_explores_sustainable_methods,_such_as_employing_biochar_to_immobilize_contaminants_in_soil,_enhance_soil_fertility_(food_security),_and_contribute_to_climate_change_mitigation_through_carbon_sequestration._Continual_research_encompasses_a_diverse_range_of_studies_pertaining_to_the_utilization_of_biochar-based_constructed_wetlands_for_the_contaminant_removal_from_wastewater.Furthermore,_ongoing_research_spans_a_wide_spectrum_of_sustainable_management_strategies_and_technologies_in_the_realms_of_solid_waste_and_electronic_waste_(E-waste).Research_in_the_chemical_aspects_of_air_pollution,_aerosols,_their_geochemistry,_and_their_implications_for_climate_change_is_being_conducted_with_a_focus_on_their_potential_benefits_for_mitigating_air_pollution_and_addressing_climate_change_in_the_South_Asian_region._Expert_faculty_members_are_investigating_emerging_topics_including_reactive_nitrogen,_tropospheric_ozone,_gas_to_particle_conversion,_transport_of_pollutant,_chemistry_of_rainwater,_fog,_and_dew,_the_development_of_analytical_methods_for_trace_species,_the_speciation_of_metals_in_surface_dust,_acid_rain,_eutrophication,_interactions_between_air_pollutants_and_the_atmosphere-biosphere,_biomonitoring,_bioaerosols,_metal_aerosols,_carbonaceous_aerosols,_atmospheric_mercury,_and_clean_energy_alternatives.Studies_are_being_conducted_on_persistent_organic_pollutants_and_their_detrimental_impacts_on_human_health,_as_well_as_the_presence_and_ecotoxicological_consequences_of_microplastics_in_aquatic_and_terrestrial_environments.Studies_of_the_Earth's_materials_and_processes_to_understand_geological_and_environmental_changes_from_the_Precambrian_to_the_Anthropocene_time_are_being_conducted._Mineralogy_and_geochemistry,_including_REE_and_isotopes,_are_used_as_major_proxies_to_understand_paleoclimate,_weathering_processes,_and_sediment_generation_in_the_Earth's_Critical_Zone._Significant_studies_have_been_completed,_and_some_are_ongoing,_on_the_Indo-Gangetic_Plains,_lakes_of_Gujarat_and_Himalaya,_Thar_desert_sediments;_weathering_processes_operating_on_Western_Ghats,_Bundelkhand_Craton,_and_Deccan_Traps.The_state_of_art_facilities_are_available_for_carrying_out_the_research._In_most_cases,_research_findings_substantially_contribute_to_the_formulation_of_policies_and_the_development_of_research_and_academic_programs.
