The_School_of_Life_Sciences_(SLS)_at_JNU_was_established_in_1970-71,_making_it_the_first_Science_School_in_the_University._It_was_founded_based_on_a_concept_paper_developed_by_the_committee_headed_by_Prof._M.S._Swaminathan_and_was_the_country's_first_school_dedicated_to_teaching_and_research_in_life_sciences._SLS_focuses_on_interdisciplinary_Life_Sciences_teaching_and_research_from_the_molecular_to_organismal_levels._It_encompasses_diverse_research_areas,_from_biochemistry_to_genetics,_studying_various_organisms._SLS_is_renowned_for_its_integrative_M.Sc._teaching_program,_offering_remedial_courses_to_accommodate_students_from_diverse_science_backgrounds._It_regularly_updates_academic_programs,_integrates_emerging_areas_into_research_and_teaching,_and_provides_well-equipped_practical_laboratories_for_hands-on_training_in_theory_subjects._SLS_offers_a_Ph.D._program_with_five_research_thematic_groups,_spanning_disciplines_from_molecules_to_organisms_and_diseases._Ph.D._students_carry_out_research_in_state-of-the-art_laboratories._The_School_consistently_secures_extramural_funding_and_has_a_strong_track_record_of_cutting_edge_research_in_multidisciplinary_areas._The_school_has_produced_more_than_760_Ph.D._and_1020_M.Sc._graduates_and_remains_an_attractive_destination_for_life_science_studies_and_research. Quality_teaching_requires_ongoing_research_activities_which_needs_a_good_deal_of_financial_support._While_it_is_our_national_mandate_to_provide_training_of_the_highest_quality_of_life_sciences,_university_system_due_to_its_own_constraints,_provides_little_intramural_support_for_the_research_programmes.SLS_is_fortunate_to_bring_in_research_funds_through_national_and_international_agencies_in_the_form_of_research_projects.National_funding_agencies_like_Department_of_Bio-Technology,_Council_of_Scientific_&_Industrial_Research,_Indian_Council_for_Agricultural_Research,_Indian_Council_for_Medical_Research,_Department_of_Science_&_Technology,_Defence_&_Ordinance_Department,_Department_of_Atomic_Energy_also_DAAD_etc._and_even_international_agencies_like_WHO,_USDA,_European_Commission,_German_Indo-French,_Indo-US_and_host_of_others_have_generously_supported_the_ongoing_research_of_the_School.The_School_has_through_various_research_grants,_obtained_a_cumulative_sum_of_about_Rs._17_crores,_for_its_ongoing_research_activities._But_for_the_research_project_funding_obtained_by_the_SLS_faculty,_it_would_have_been_impossible_to_run_our_research_training_programmes.Research_projects_thus_not_only_enable_the_faculty_members_in_running_their_research_programmes,_but_also_enable_the_students_to_take_challenging_and_modern_research_topics_for_their_M.Phil._and_Ph.D._thesis.Students_trained_at_SLS_are_in_demand._Almost_all_the_students_completing_Ph.D._degrees_from_SLS(285_till_date),_get_opportunities_for_post-doctoral_work_abroad,_and_a_great_many_return_to_serve_the_country_.School's_faculty_and_students_publish_extensively_in_reputed_national_and_international_journals._To_date,_SLS_has_to_its_credit,_over_2000_research_publications.These_research_efforts_have_resulted_in_numerous_awards,_honours_and_recognitions_to_the_students_and_the_faculty_of_SLS.There_are_three_Bhatnagar_Awardees,_four_fellows_of_the_Indian_National_Science_Academy,_four_fellows_of_the_Indian_Academy_of_Sciences_and_six_fellows_of_the_National_Academy_of_Sciences_within_the_SLS_faculty._First_international_patent_from_India_(AmA_I)_was_obtained_from_SLS._Several_other_patents_are_in_the_pipeline_including_one_for_a_very_sensitive_immunodiagnostic_method_for_detecting_tuberculosis_antigens. CollaborationsSince_SLS_has_faculty_with_expertise_in_all_major_areas_of_Modern_Biology,_School's_faculty_is_very_often_called_upon_to_teach_in_other_Universities.The_School_has_also_extended_support_and_help_in_developing_teaching_programmes_and_organizing_refresher_courses_in_other_Universities.The_faculty_of_the_School_plays_important_roles_in_University_Grants_Commission/Council_of_Scientific_&_Industrial_Research_(CSIR),_National_testing_for_NET_examinations/research_fellowships_for_RAs,_JRFs_and_pool_officers.Our_faculty_members_also_serve_on_a_vast_array_of_national_committees_and_task_forces._Two_SLS_faculty_members_(Prof._P.N._Srivastava_and_Prof._Asis_Datta)_have_occupied_the_University_VC's_position_and_one_(Prof._P.N._Srivastava)_served_as_President,_Indian_National_Science_Congress._The_School_provides_a_pool_of_experts_for_governmental_agencies_like_University_Grants_Commission,_Department_of_Bio-Technology,_Department_of_Science_&_Technology,_Indian_Council_for_Agricultural_Research,_Indian_Council_for_Medical_Research,_CSIR,_Union_Public_Service_Commission_(UPSC),_National_Council_for_Educational_Research_&_Training_(NCERT)_and_others.Several_faculty_members_have_worked_for_the_working_groups_of_the_Planning_Commission,_on_health,_education_and_biotechnology_and_members_on_state_councils._The_School_also_provides_research_supports_to_the_students,_teachers_and_researchers_from_other_state_university_by_allowing_them_to_use_its_CIF_facility._The_School_therefore,_serves_as_a_catalyst_in_the_vital_scientific_and_educational_activities_of_India_and_has_commitment_to_continue_its_service_for_the_nation.The_School_has_link-research_activities_with_other_institutes_in_the_country,_like_Nuclear_Science_Centre_(NSC),_National_Institute_of_Immunology_(NII),_All_India_Institute_of_Medical_Sciences_(AIIMS),_Centre_for_Cellular_and_Molecular_Biology_(CCMB),_Tata_Institute_for_Fundamental_Research_(TIFR),_Institute_for_Nuclear_Medicine_and_Applied_Sciences_(INMAS),_Bhabha_Atomic_Research_Centre_(BARC),_International_Centre_for_Genetic_Engineering_&_Biotechnology_(ICGEB)_etc._and_several_other_universities._The_School_is_also_the_nodal_affiliating_body_for_CCMB,_Hyderabad_and_NII,_New_Delhi._Most_faculty_members_have_collaborative_research_programmes_with_institutions_in_Germany,_France,_Russia,_Poland,_USA,_Israel_and_several_other_national_and_international_institutions.h6
