MPhil Programme

a._The_MPhil_programme_is_made_up_of_coursework_and_a_dissertation._The_coursework_has_to_be_completed_in_the_first_two_semesters_before_the_dissertation_can_be_written_and_submitted_(third_and_fourth_semesters)._Altogether_a_student_earns_a_total_of_26_credits._These_are_distributed_as_follows:

b._The_MPhil_programme_provides_three_ways_of_earning_course_credits._Students_who_have_done_their_MA_in_History_from_JNU_follow_Combination_A_while_students_who_have_not_done_their_MA_in_JNU_are_generally_advised_to_follow_either_Combination_B_or_C._Additionally,_two_2_credit_courses,_on_Reading_Sources_and_Reading_Texts_can_be_offered_in_the_Monsoon_and_Winter_Semesters_respectively,_in_case_five_or_more_students_wish_to_offer_these.

a._Each_student_will_be_allotted_an_advisor/supervisor_by_the_faculty_by_mid-August._The_2_credit_Historiography_course_for_the_students_who_have_done_MA_History_from_JNU_is_done_usually_with_the_advisor/supervisor._It_involves_writing_an_essay_on_a_historiographic_theme._This_paper_will_be_presented_to_the_faculty,_fully_written_out,_in_the_third_week_of_November.

b._Tutorials Non-JNU_History_M.As_who_do_Combination_B_have_to_do_two_lecture_courses_from_the_MA_basket_of_courses_that_are_available._They_will_write_two_assignments,_participate_in_tutorial_discussions_and_appear_for_an_end_semester_examination._The_second_assignment_will_be_longer_than_the_first_(see_below)._The_grades_for_the_tutorials_(i.e._assignment_+_discussion)_constitute_50_percent_of_the_credit_of_the_course,_the_End_Semester_Exam_constituting_the_other_50_%._Attendance_in_tutorial_discussions_is_compulsory_as_discussion_carries_weightage_in_assessment._(However,_there_is_no_discussion_for_tutorials_written_for_Historical_Method.)

A_tutorial_is_an_essay_that_seeks_to_present_ideas_in_the_writer's_own_words._If_passages_(or_even_sentences)_from_a_book_(or_from_any_other_source),_are_simply_copied_out_then_it_is_termed_plagiarism,_considered_to_be_the,_equivalent_of_stealing,_and_will_earn_the_student_and_"F"_(Failed)_grade.

The_first_assignment_must_be_concisely_written_in_around_2000_words;_the_second_essay_is_expected_to_be_3000_words_long.

Tutorial_essays_must_follow_a_schedule_announced_at_the_beginning_of_each_semester._Tutorial_essays_are_to_be_submitted_in_the_Centre's_office,_before_5_pm_on_the_due_date._Please_ensure_that_the_submission_is_recorded_in_the_office_register._Grades_are_deducted_for_delays_in_submission._Tutorial_scripts_are_not_returned_to_students._Please_keep_a_copy.

c._Seminar_papers

Seminar_meetings_held_with_the_Seminar_Instructor_throughout_the_semester_are_compulsory._Discussions_in_the_course_of_the_semester_and_written_scripts_at_the_end_of_the_semester_are_both_taken_into_account_for_assessing_grades._Seminar_papers_are_to_be_submitted_at_the_office_by_the_due_date.

A_Seminar_paper_may_have_a_word_limit_of_approximately_8000_words._Students_are_encouraged_to_undertake_original_research_using_primary_sources_for_the_same_in_Seminar_papers.

Passages_(or_even_sentences)_from_a_book_(or_from_any_other_source),_that_are_simply_copied_for_a_Seminar_paper_are_termed_plagiarism,_considered_to_be_the,_equivalent_of_stealing,_and_will_earn_the_student_an_"F"_(Failed)_grade.

The_MPhil_dissertation_should_not_be_less_than_30000_words.

3._Other_Important_rules_and_regulations_

a._Registration_of_courses_is_the_sole_responsibility_of_a_student._No_student_will_be_entitled_to_any_grade_in_a_course_unless_s/he_has_formally_registered_for_it_on_the_scheduled_date.

b._Late_registration_will_be_allowed_up_to_the_date_notified_by_the_Dean_of_the_School_for_every_semester.

c._A_student_should_inform_the_Chair_of_the_Centre_through_the_teacher_in_charge_of_the_course_in_case_of_absence_from_a_sessional/end_semester_exam._The_application_for_the_same_should_be_submitted_immediately_before_or_after_the_concerned_exam._If_the_absence_is_on_medical_grounds,_a_medical_certificate_must_be_attached_to_the_application._In_exceptional_cases,_as_assessed_by_the_chair_and_the_faculty_committee,_on_alternative_examination_may_be_arranged_in_genuinely_deserving_cases.

d._A_student_may_apply_for_a_zero_semester_on_legitimate_medical_grounds._The_following_is_the_procedure_to_apply_for_a_zero_semester.

•_Report_to_the_JNU_Medical_Officer_immediately_after_falling_ill. •_Inform_the_Chairperson_of_the_Centre_about_your_illness_and_inability_to_participate_in_the_programme. •_If_you_happen_to_be_outside_Delhi_when_you_fall_sick,_you_must_inform_the_Centre_Office_and_submit_medical_documents_from_recognized_Government_hospitals. •_Application_for_a_zero_semester_must_be_made_on_a_form_available_at_the_office_of_the_Centre

e._The_repetition_of_a_course_towards_improvement_of_grades_is_not_permissible._Students_must_note_that_they_are_required_to_clear_every_single_course_for_which_they_register_every_consecutive_semester,_or_they_will_have_to_leave_the_MPhil_programme._Courses_cannot_be_repeated_in_the_following_semester.

f._Revaluation_of_a_course_is_permissible_within_three_weeks_of_the_declaration_of_results_for_that_semester.

g._The_coursework_shall_be_completed_within_the_first_two_consecutive_semesters,_and_the_whole_MPhil_programme_(including_dissertation)_within_four_consecutive_semesters_(unless_a_student_has_been_granted_a_zero,_and_hence_a_fifth,_semester)._A_student_has_the_option_of_submitting_the_dissertation_in_the_third_semester_provided_the_supervisor_is_satisfied_with_the_work.

h._The_M.Phil_degree_will_be_awarded_only_to_those_who_have_a_minimum_CGPA_of_5.5_in_the_general_category_and_5.0_in_the_reserved_category.

i._The_promotion_to_PhD_status_for_continuing_students_in_the_MPhil/PhD_programme_is_not_automatic._They_can_be_registered_only_for_a_provisional_PhD_until_their_MPhil_viva-voce_examination_is_conducted,_and_their_CGPA_is_thereafter_calculated._Only_those_students_who_have_a_minimum_CGPA_of_6.0_(General_Category)_and_5.5_(Reserved_Categories)_in_the_whole_MPhil_programme_will_be_allowed_to_continue_in_the_PhD_programme.

j._Students_who_have_a_CGPA_of_A_minus_or_more_in_their_course_work_can_apply_through_the_Chairperson_with_the_recommendation_of_the_supervisor_to_the_Dean_for_the_Direct_Phd_programme_after_two_semesters_of_MPhil._The_application_has_to_be_approved_by_the_CASR.

4._Calendar_

i._With_regard_to_students_doing_Lecture/Course_Work,_the_same_calendar_is_applicable,_as_the_MA_Programme

ii._Seminar_papers_should_be_submitted_by_the_first_week_of_December_and_the_first_week_of_May_for_the_Monsoon_and_Winter_Semesters_respectively.

iii._Historiography_presentations_will_take_place_in_the_third_week_of_November_or_the_fourth_week_of_April_for_the_Monsoon_and_Winter_Semesters_respectively.

iv._Synopsis_presentation_for_fourth_semester_students_will_take_place_in_the_fourth_week_of_February._The_synopsis_should_include_as_complete_an_idea_of_the_chapterisation_of_the_dissertation,_a_brief_survey_of_the_historiography_and_sources,_and_a_detailed_discussion_of_one_chapter.

v._Full_draft_of_the_dissertation_should_be_submitted_to_the_Supervisor_before_the_end_of_the_Winter_Semester_(12th_May).

5._Online_Progress_Report:_

Students_in_the_third_and_fourth_semesters_are_expected_to_fill_in_the_online_progress_report_form_before_the_end_of_each_semester_(5th_Dec_and_12th_May)._Please_submit_either_a_hard_or_a_soft_copy_to_your_respective_supervisors.
