Within_the_DAAD-sponsored_program_“Comparative_Economic_Development_Studies”,_the_Centre_for_International_Trade_and_Development,_Jawaharlal_Nehru_University_(JNU),_HTW_Berlin_–_University_of_Applied_Sciences_and_Freie_Universität_Berlin_organized_a_five-day_workshop_on_"New_Paradigm_of_Economic_Development:_Social_and_Environmental_Dimensions"_from_December_4th_to_8th,_2017,_in_New_Delhi.

The_workshop_aimed_to_analyze_conventional_development_objectives_and_discuss_new_development_challenges_and_effective_policies_to_combat_them. _While_acknowledging_that_developmental_objectives_and_paradigms_may_vary_widely_across_countries_given_significant_international_differences_in_socio-economic_conditions,_relative_performances_of_similarly_placed_countries_and_the_scope_of_profiting_by_learning_from_the_examples_of_success_cases_were_also_discussed

Papers_presented_at_the_conference_included_topics_on_evaluation_of_development_policies_targeted_towards_poverty_alleviation,_food_security,_agriculture,_gender;_challenges_for_international_trade_and_investment;_financial_sector_reforms;_economic_growth_and_sustainable_development,_clean_energy,_energy_efficiency,_green_accounting.

Previous_Conference

The_Centre_for_International_Trade_and_Development_organized_an international_conference entitled "Trade,_Growth_and_Development:_Two_Decades_of_Reforms_in_India_and_After" on April_3-4,_2012 at_the_Convention_Centre,_Jawaharlal_Nehru_University._The_main_objective_of_the_conference_was_to_evaluate_whether_trade_liberalization_has_helped_India_to_achieve_a_higher_growth_rate_with_equitable_income_distribution_and_accomplish_social_development._The_conference_brought_a_rich_confluence_of_ideas_from_scholars_across_the_world_and_within_India,_who_having_been_working_on_different_aspects_of_refining_the_policy_package_in_India's_growth_and_development_path.

The_plenary_sessions_included:_Foundations_of_Economic_Development_by_Professor_Kaushik_Basu_(C._Marks_Professor_of_International_Studies,_Cornell_University,_and_Chief_Economic_Advisor,_Government_of_India),_Result_of_Increased_Public_School_Enrolment_by_Professor_Abhijit_Vinayak_Banerjee_(Ford_Foundation_International_Professor,_Massachusetts_Institute_of_Technology)_and_Integration_with_the_Global_Economy_since_India's_Reforms_by_Professor_T._N._Srinivasan_(Samuel_C._Park_Jr._Professor_Emeritus_of_Economics,_Yale_University).

Several_eminent_scholars_from_different_institutions_across_the_country_presented_their_research_and_deliberated_on_the_core_issues_of_the_Indian_growth_and_development_experience_for_the_two_days._The_analyses_took_a_hard_look_at_theoretical_issues_relating_to_trade,_growth_and_development,_and_also_at_empirics_from_the_Indian_experience_in_order_to_identify_the_policy_gaps_and_derive_lessons_for_the_future_ahead.

The_Centre_for_International_Trade_and_Development_organized_a two-day_conference on "Growth_and_Development:_Future_Directions_for_India" during April_23-24,_2010 at_the_Committee_Room_of_SIS_building,_Jawaharlal_Nehru_University._Since_the_initiation_of_'economic_reforms'_in_1991,_there_has_been_a_substantial_literature_on_growth_and_development,_both_theoretical_and_empirical,_that_forms_the_knowledge_pool_on_this_subject._Given_this_knowledge_pool,_the_conference_aimed_at_deliberating_on_an_interesting_question_"has_the_behavior_of_the_Indian_economy_since_1991_conformed_to_what_may_reasonably_be_expected_on_the_basis_of_this_knowledge?"_The_conference_was_structured_in_eight_sessions_of_invited_papers_around_the_following_themes:_Macroeconomy,_Industry,_Social_sector,_Financial_sector,_Poverty,_Sustainable_development,_Technology_and_Trade._Renowned_scholars_from_different_institutions_participated_in_the_conference_as_speakers,_discussants_and_chair_persons._The_conference_was_attended_by_large_number_of_participants_from_the_academic_community_including_young_research_students_of_JNU._The_rich_and_intellectually_stimulating_deliberations_during_the_conference_helped_further_understanding_the_working_of_the_Indian_economy_and_what_could_be_the_way_forward.
