p{ text-align:justify; line-height:_19px; font-size:14px; margin-bottom:_10px_!important; } M.A._in_Philosophy M.A._programme_is_designed_to_develop_philosophical_aptitude_and_analytical_skills_among_the_students_through_a_rigorous_training_in_the_discipline._It_will_focus_on_the_study_of_the_distinctive_character_of_philosophical_inquiry,_debates_in_metaphysics,_epistemology,_logic_and_ethics.

Since_philosophical_inquiry_is_not_isolated,_but_rooted_in_the_basic_questions_of_other_academic_disciplines,_and_social_life,_students_will_be_encouraged_to_comprehend_the_interdisciplinary_and_foundational_character_of_philosophical_studies._They_will_also_be_trained_to_identify_and_appreciate_the_sources_of_philosophical_questions_and_puzzles_in_our_reflections_on_language,_thought,_knowledge_and_values.

The_programme_reviews_and_attempts_to_overcome_the_received_binaries_and_dichotomies_such_as_study_of_philosophy_in_terms_of_geographical_and_civilizational_divisions,_intra_disciplinary_segregations_like_analytic_philosophy_and_phenomenology,_metaphysics_and_epistemology,_moral_and_social_philosophy,_etc._An_intensive_study_of_philosophical_texts_for_a_critical_appraisal_of_concepts_and_arguments_used_by_philosophers,_and_writing_of_philosophical_essays_is_an_integral_part_of_the_programme.

Course_Structure The_students_are_required_to_take_10_core_and_06_optional_courses_of_04_credits_each._Out_of_the_06_optional_courses,_students_are_encouraged_to_take_02_courses_from_other_Centres/Schools.

The_four_core_courses_in_the_First_Semester_address_the_foundational_character_of_philosophical_studies._These_are:_(i)_Philosophical_Studies:_Problems_and_Perspectives,_(ii)_Epistemology_and_Metaphysics:_Issues_and_Problems_of_Knowing_and_Being,_(iii)_Moral_and_Social_Philosophy,_and_(iv)_Logic_and_Scientific_Methods.

The_four_core_courses_in_the_Second_Semester_address_the_inter-disciplinary_character_of_philosophical_studies,_and_also_acquaint_students_to_some_of_the_important_developments_in_20th_century_philosophy._These_are:_(i)_Philosophy_of_Social_Sciences;_(ii)_Philosophy_of_Language,_(iii)_Readings_in_20th_century_Indian_Philosophy,_and_(iv)_Readings_in_Analytic_Philosophy_and_Phenomenology.

The_remaining_two_core_courses—(i)_Reading_a_Philosopher_and_(ii)_Project_on_a_Philosophical_Theme—are_seminar_papers._These_are_offered_in_the_Third_and_the_Fourth_Semesters_respectively._The_former_engages_the_students_in_an_intensive_study_of_selected_text(s)_of_a_philosopher,_and_the_latter_in_writing_a_philosophical_essay_based_on_their_individual_research_project.

The_optional_courses_are_designed_in_view_of_the_academic_and_research_interests_of_the_faculty_members_of_the_Centre._These_courses_focus_on_the_presuppositions_and_implications_of_the_on-going_philosophical_debates. _
