1._Structure_of_the_MA_programme
The_MA_programme_carries_a_total_of_64_credits._Students_are_advised_to_distribute_these_over_four_semesters_in_16_credits_per_semester._In_order_to_fulfill_the_requirements_of_the_Master's_programme,_students_are_required_to_compulsorily_credit_the_following_set_of_Courses_in_the_two_years_of_their_Masters_programme.

Overview_courses_seek_to_go_beyond_narrow_themes_and_regions_to_explore_the_inter-connections_between_different_processes_within_social_formations._Three_overview_courses_and_one_methodology_course_are_offered_during_the_semesters_shown.

1.2_Period_Specialization
Every_student_has_to_specialize_in_a_particular_period_of_Indian_history._The_Centre_offers_specialization_in_Ancient,_Medieval_and_Modern_History._All_students_must_decide_on_their_specialization_before_they_join_the_Centre._Each_student_will_do_a_minimum_of_20_credits_of_lecture_courses_and_one_seminar_course_in_her_period_of_specialization.
For_every_period_specialization,_there_is_a_set_of_introductory_courses,_offered_in_the_first_two_semesters._These_courses_seek_to_provide_a_general_perspective_on_the_period,_introduce_students_to_the_historiographical_debates_and_the_dominant_historical_trends,_and_equip_students_with_some_technical_expertise.
1.3_Non-Indian_History
Two_non-Indian_history_courses_have_to_be_credited_by_all_students.
1.4_Seminar_Papers
Two_seminar_courses_of_4_credits_each_have_to_be_taken_in_the_fourth_semester._At_least
one_seminar_paper_will_be_in_the_period_of_specialization._Those_who_have_chosen_a_theme_specialization_(see_below_1.5)_must_choose_their_second_seminar_paper_on_that_theme.
1.5_Theme_Specialization
In_addition_to_the_period_specialization,_students_may_opt_to_specialize_on_a_theme._This_is_to_allow_a_deeper_study_of_a_theme_of_interest,_which_may_go_beyond_the_limits_of_the_period_of_specialization.

A_minimum_of_16_credits_is_necessary_for_specialization_on_a_theme._This_must_include_a_seminar_course_in_the_4th_semester_(See_1.6_below)

1.6_Open_Options
A_total_of_sixteen_credits_are_Open_Options._A_full_choice_may_be_made_from_the_following_categories_of_courses:
a._Languages_-_total_4_credits,_to_be_done_in_two_2_credit_courses,_one_each_in_the_3rd_and_4th_semesters.
b._Additional_courses_in_the_period_of_specialization.
c._Courses_in_other_Units_(Ancient,_Medieval_and_Modern).
d._Courses_outside_the_CHS._To_do_such_courses,_applications_must_be_made_to_the_faculty,_stating_reasons_for_selecting_these_courses.
1.7_Four_Credit_and_Two_Credit_Courses
Most_of_the_courses_offered_by_the_Centre_carry_4_credits._Some_2_credit_courses_are_offered_as_open_options._Students_may_take,_when_offered,_two_2_credit_courses_in_lieu_of_one_4_credit_course.
1.8_Language_Courses
These_are_optional._They_are_available_as_2_credit_courses_in_the_third_and_fourth_semesters.
Those_who_plan_to_do_research_in_History_would_find_these_courses_useful.

Four_credit_lecture_courses:_For_all_four-credit_lecture_courses_students_have_to_write_two_assignments,_attend_tutorial_discussions_for_the_same,_and_appear_for_an_End_semester_examination._The_grades_for_the_tutorials_(i.e._written_assignment_+_discussion)_constitute_50%_of_the_credit_for_the_course._Tutorial_discussions_are_important_as_they_carry_weightage_in_assessment._(However,_there_is_no_discussion_for_assignments_written_for_overview_courses_and_Historical_Methods._Students_are_advised_to_enquire_about_the_manner_of_evaluation_in_each_of_these_courses_from_the_particular_course_instructor)
Two-credit_courses_(other_than_the_Language_Courses):_These_courses_will_usually_begin_with_about_six_two-hour_lectures._Students_will_have_to_write_two_short_notes_and_one_extended_essay._Not_all_these_courses_will_have_end_semester_examinations._(Students_are_expected_to_find_out_from_the_course_instructors_the_mode_of_evaluation_of_specific_courses).
The_Language_Course_will_usually_have_two_mid-term_exams_and_one_end_semester_exam.
Seminar_Papers
Seminar_courses_(fourth_semester)_are_meant_to_introduce_students_to_original_research.
Regular_seminar_meetings_throughout_the_semester_are_compulsory._Discussions_and_written_scripts_are_both_taken_into_account_for_assessing_grade._Seminar_papers_are_to_be_submitted_at_the_office_by_the_due_date_to_be_announced_in_the_fourth_semester.
2._Tutorial/Seminar_Paper_writing
Any_written_assignment_produced_by_a_student_must_be_an_original_essay_written_by_the_student._Copying_from_any_source_will_be_penalized._A_tutorial_is_an_essay_that_seeks_to_present_ideas_in_the_writer's_own_words._If_passages_(or_even_sentences)_from_a_book_(or_from_any_other_source),_are_simply_copied_out_then_it_is_termed_plagiarism,_considered_to_be_the,_equivalent_of_stealing,_and_will_earn_the_student_and_"F"_(Failed)_grade.
Tutorial_essays_must_be_concise_and_of_approximately_2000_words.
A_tutorial_must_be_written_approximately_every_ten_days_following_a_schedule_announced_at_the_beginning_of_the_semester._Tutorial_essays_are_to_be_submitted_in_the_Centre's_office_before_5_p.m._on_the_due_date._Please_ensure_that_the_submission_is_recorded_in_the_office_register._Grades_are_deducted_for_delay_in_submission._Tutorial_scripts_are_not_returned_to_students,_so_copies_must_be_retained_by_them.
Seminar_meetings_held_with_the_Seminar_Instructor_throughout_the_semester_are_compulsory._Discussions_in_the_course_of_the_semester_and_written_scripts_at_the_end_of_the_semester_are_both_taken_into_account_for_assessing_grades._Seminar_papers_are_to_be_submitted_at_the_office_by_the_due_date.
A_Seminar_paper_may_have_a_word_limit_of_approximately_8000_words._Students_are_encouraged_to_undertake_original_research_using_primary_sources_for_the_same_in_Seminar_papers.
Passages_(or_even_sentences)_from_a_book_(or_from_any_other_source),_that_are_simply_copied_for_a_Seminar_paper_are_termed_plagiarism,_considered_to_be_the,_equivalent_of_stealing,_and_will_earn_the_student_an_"F"_(Failed)_grade.

3._Other_Important_Rules_and_Regulations_
►In_any_one_semester_a_student_normally_registers_for_courses_carrying_16-18_credits._In_exceptional_circumstances,_she/he_may_take_up_to_24_credits,_inclusive_of_courses_that_are_repeated_to_improve_grades.
►_A_student_must_complete_a_minimum_of_eight_credits_in_a_semester_in_order_to_be_promoted_to_the_next_semester.
►_A_students_would_be_allowed_to_repeat_a_course_with_the_recommendation_of_the_Centre,_but_no_course_can_be_repeated_more_than_once._When_a_course_is_repeated,_the_previous_grade_in_the_course_will_be_cancelled.
►The_student_may_take_additional_courses_with_the_recommendation_of_the_Centre,_and_the_CGPA_would_then_be_calculated_with_the_highest_grade_for_64_credits,_not_over_the_total_of_courses_registered._The_grade_for_the_compulsory_courses,_however,_would_always_be_taken_into_account.
►_Registration_of_courses_is_the_sole_responsibility_of_a_student._No_students_will_be_entitled_to_any_grade_in_a_course_unless_he_or_she_has_formally_registered_for_it_within_the_period_specified_by_the_university._At_the_beginning_of_each_semester,_members_of_the_registration_committee_will_be_available_for_advice.
►Late_registration_will_be_allowed_up_to_the_date_notified_by_the_Dean_of_the_School_for_every_semester.
►_A_student_will_be_allowed_to_withdraw_from_a_course_for_which_he_or_she_has_initially_registered,_up_to_the_date_notified_by_the_Dean_of_the_School_for_every_semester.
►_A_student_may_wish_to_add_courses_after_initial_registration,_by_either_dropping_a_course_s/he_has_registered_for,_or_as_an_extra_course,_up_to_the_date_notified_by_the_Dean_of_the_School_for_every_semester.
►A_student_should_inform_the_Chairperson_of_the_Centre_through_the_teacher_in-charge_of_the_course_in_the_following_cases:
Absence_from_a_sessional_or_end-semester_examination._The_application_should_be_submitted_immediately_before_or_after_the_concerned_examination._If_the_absence_is_on_medical_grounds,_a_medical_certificate_must_be_attached_to_the_application.
If_a_student_wishes_to_extend_the_MA_programme_beyond_4_semesters_(in_order_to_repeat_courses,_also_known_as_the_fifth/sixth_semester)_the_application_should_be_submitted_at_the_end_of_the_fourth_semester._The_statutes_permit_two_additional_semesters_but_accommodation_is_usually_not_available_for_such_students.
►All_courses_must_be_cleared._Getting_an_"F"_grade_in_a_course_does_not_amount_to_clearing_the_course._A_minimum_CGPA_of_B_minus_is_required_for_qualifying_for_the_MA_degree.
►_A_student_will_not_be_allowed_to_appear_for_the_End_semester_examination_of_a_Course_unless_they_have_completed_one_sessional,_i.e._either_a_tutorial_or_mid-semester_exam._The_tutorial_requirement_implies_the_submission_of_the_paper_and_participation_in_discussion.
►_Zero_Semester:_If_a_student_is_unable_to_carry_on_with_the_required_course_work_due_to_prolonged_illness,_he_or_she_may_apply_for_a_zero_semester_and_do_an_additional_semester_in_lieu_of_that._The_following_is_the_procedure_to_apply_for_a_zero_semester.
•_Report_to_the_JNU_Medical_Officer_immediately_after_falling_ill.
•_Inform_the_Chairperson_of_the_Centre_about_your_illness_and_inability_to_participate_in_the_programme
•_If_you_happen_to_be_outside_Delhi_when_you_fall_sick,_you_must_inform_the_Centre_Office_and_submit_medical_documents_from_recognized_Government_hospitals.
•_Application_for_a_zero_semester_must_be_made_on_a_form_available_at_the_office_of_the_Centre
►_Students_are_assigned_advisors_from_amongst_the_faculty._For_any_queries,_doubts_and_problems_related_to_their_academic_life_or_personal_well-being,_students_may_consult_their_advisors.
►Revaluation_of_a_course_is_permissible_within_one_month_of_the_declaration_of_results_for_that_semester.
