US Studies Programme

p { font-size:14px_!important; text-align:justify; line-height:_19px; margin-bottom:_10px_!important; } The_US_Studies_Programme_of_the_School_of_International_Studies_is_one_of_the_oldest_Area_Studies_programmes_of_the_School._Founded_by_Late_Prof._M.S._Venkataramani_in_early_fifties,_this_programme_has_consistently_attracted_large_number_of_students_interested_in_studying_various_facets_of_US_institutions,_political_processes_and_foreign_and_national_security_policies._The_programme_is_proud_to_have_produced_above_two_hundred_doctoral_theses_and_several_hundred_M.Phil_dissertations.

Faculty_of_this_programme_are_well_known_scholars_in_the_field_and_have_considerable_international_exposure._Their_research_experience,_participation_in_critical_international_and_national_debates_on_crucial_issues_involving_US_policy_towards_India_and_its_neighbours;_and_their_well_rounded_knowledge_of_US_Politics_and_Foreign_Policy_have_enabled_them_to_encourage_scholars_to_study,_conduct_research_and_expand_their_knowledge_and_understanding_of_the_United_States._Alumni_of_the_US_Studies_programme_have_found_a_place_in_the_faculty_of_various_colleges_and_universities,_in_the_print_and_audio-visual_media_and_also_in_different_branches_of_the_Indian_bureaucracy.

Courses_offered_by_the_programme_are_designed_to_interpret_issues_and_events_in_American_history,_politics,_foreign_policy_from_an_interdisciplinary_perspective._It_aims_at_promoting_an_Indian_perspective_and_has_a_wide_appeal_among_the_students_of_social_sciences_and_International_Relations_streams._Students_also_explore_ideas_about_citizenship,_national_identity,_emerging_Role_of_Indian_Diaspora_in_US_politics,_while_also_focusing_on_how_America_engages_Rising_India.

Courses_are_offered_at_M.A._and_Ph.D_levels._Courses_are_inter-disciplinary_in_nature_and_aim_at_educating_Indian_scholars_and_equipping_them_with_expertise_to_analyze_politics_and_governance,_public_and_foreign_policies_as_well_as_multifaceted_social_relations_in_the_United_States._A_balanced_approach,_comprising_of_theoretical,_empirical_and_deductive_methods,_is_pursued_in_the_conduct_of_research_programmes_and_activities.

RESEARCH_ACTIVITIES

Doctoral_candidates_who_are_at_an_advanced_stage_of_their_Thesis_formulation_compete_for_university_grant_to_conduct_field_research_in_the_United_States._Research_Scholars_also_apply_for_various_other_Research_Fellowships_to_conduct_field_research.

The_US_Studies_Programme_seeks_to_promote_appropriate_understanding_of_the_American_society,_polity_and_foreign_policy._It_trains_the_students_to_engage_in_serious_research_going_beyond_what_is_available_in_the_media_and_the_internet_and_helps_them_to_make_use_of_the_enormous_amount_of_source_material_available_in_various_libraries._Efforts_are_made_to_involve_and_include_its_students_to_undertake_archival_research_in_their_data_collection_as_well.

Workshops,_seminars_and_conferences_are_organized_regularly_to_address_the_emerging_trends_in_US_Domestic_Politics_and_Foreign_Policy_and_issues_related_to_globalization,_Human_Rights,_Traditional_and_Non-Traditional_security,_Transnational_Terrorism,_Management_of_international_trade_system,_Gender_issues,_Elections_and_Diaspora_issues.

Scholars_who_have_obtained_degrees_on_from_the_programme_serve_as_government_officials,_specialists_in_think_tanks,_teachers_in_various_universities_and_colleges_around_India,_some_are_also_media_consultants_and_journalists_in_print_and_audio-visual_media.
