The_Centre_for_Russian_and_Central_Asian_Studies_is_Jawaharlal_Nehru_University's_one_of_the_premiere_centres_for_interdisciplinary_research_and_studies_on_Russia,_Central_Asia_and_other_republics_of_the_former_Soviet_Union._Our_primary_aim_is_to_foster_an_interdisciplinary_insight_on_issues_pertaining_to_this_region_by_bringing_together_individual_scholars,_trained_in_diverse_social_science_disciplines._We_have_an_excellent_community_of_scholars_who_specialize_in_disciplines_ranging_from_Political_Science,_International_Relations,_History,_Economics_and_Sociology_to_Russian_Language_and_Literature._The_Centre_encourages_interdisciplinary_thinking_and_promotes_opportunities_for_meeting,_interaction_and_exchange_of_views_with_scholars_from_India_and_abroad._In_terms_of_facilitating_academic_interaction,_the_Centre_regularly_organizes_international/national_seminars,_round_table_discussions,_talks_and_lectures.

The_Centre_has_a_regular_M.Phil/Ph.D_programme_and_offers_courses_for_the_M.A._programme_of_the_School_of_International_Studies._The_number_of_seats_available_for_M.Phil/Ph.D_programme_in_the_Centre_is_approximately_twenty-five_every_year..

Goals

To_continue_as_a_Centre_of_Excellence,_doing_research_and_teaching_on_issues_of_Russia,_Central_Asia_and_other_former_Soviet_republics._It_seeks_to_create_a_necessary_infrastructure_for_a_systematic_study_of_the_economy,_political_system,_society,_culture,_language_and_the_foreign_policy_of_post-Soviet_states._It_promotes_academic_programmes,_teaching_and_research_along_with_the_collection_of_adequate_primary_and_secondary_research_material_under_study_in_the_form_of_books,_microfilms,_journals,_newspapers_and_reference_documents._A_particular_emphasis_on_the_creation_of_an_authentic_and_comprehensive_database_on_the_region_is_also_being_undertaken.To_develop_a_comprehensive_understanding_of_the_security,_political_and_economic_situation_in_Russia,_Central_Asia_and_other_former_Soviet_Republics.To_study_the_challenges_posed_by_the_changing_international_political_scenario_to_the_above_states_and_cooperation_of_these_countries_with_India.To_strengthen_linkages_with_newly_emerging_academic_institutions_in_former_Soviet_Republics.To_promote_research_and_studies_on_the_above_issues_in_other_academic_institutions_in_India.To_promote_meaningful_research_in_the_field_of_bilateral_relations_between_India,_on_the_one_hand_and_Russia,_Central_Asia_and_other_former_Soviet_Republics_on_the_other._Study_of_India's_relations_with_these_countries_constitute_an_important_part_of_our_teaching_and_researchTo_promote_research_and_scholarships_within_inter-disciplinary_framework_on_various_aspects_related_to_India,_Russia_and_former_Soviet_Republics.

History

The_Centre_for_Russian_and_East_European_Studies started_functioning_as_an_independent_academic_Centre_in_the_late_1960s._Earlier_it_was_a_part_of_International_Politics_and_Commonwealth_Studies_Programme_in_the Indian_School_of_International_Studies (ISIS)._In_the_early_1970s,_the_Indian_School_of_International_Studies_was_merged_with_the_newly_established_Jawaharlal_Nehru_University_and_named_as_School_of_International_Studies_(SIS)._Since_then,_the_Centre_has_functioned_as_an_independent_and_regular_academic_unit_within_the_School_of_International_Studies._The_first_batch_of_regular_M._Phil/Ph.D_scholars_was_admitted_to_the_Centre_in_1974.

In_1975_the_name_of_the_Centre_was_changed_to Centre_for_Soviet_and_East_European_Studies (CSEES)._After_the_disintegration_of_Soviet_Union,_the_name_of_the_Centre_changed_to_Centre_for_Russian,_Central_Asian_and_East_European_Studies_(CRCA&EES)._The_Centre_is_currently_known_as Centre_for_Russian_and_Central_Asian_Studies (CRCAS)_following_reorganisation_of_different_Centres_in_the_School_of_International_Studies_in_2005.

Since_its_inception,_the_Centre_has_worked_in_close_co-operation_with_policy_makers_and_the_larger_academic_community._The_Centre_hosts_guest_scholars,_both_from_India_and_abroad,_who_spend_some_time_working_on_issues_related_to_the_post-Soviet_states._Regular_seminars_and_conferences_are_organized_by_the_Centre_in_order_to_bring_together_a_wide_range_of_expertise_and_to_facilitate_exchange_of_views_among_scholars._In_recognition_of_the_contribution_made_by_the_Centre_and_its_potential_for_excellence,_the_University_Grants_Commission_(UGC)_of_India_has_recognized_this_Centre_for_Special_Assistance_under_the_UGC_Area_Studies_Programme.
