The_Centre_for_International_Legal_Studies_(CILS)_is_a_pioneer_in_the_promotion_of_teaching_and_research_in_International_Law._The_history_of_CILS_goes_back_to_the_Indian_School_of_International_Studies_(ISIS)_that_was_registered_by_the_Indian_Council_of_World_Affairs_(ICWA)_at_Sapru_House_on_25_May_1956._Several_renowned_International_Law_scholars_of_time_such_as_Prof._Quincy_Wright,_Prof._Percy_Corbett_and_Prof._Julius_Stone,_contributed_in_laying_a_strong_foundation_for_the_study_of_International_Law_at_post-graduate_and_doctoral_levels_within_a_unique_architecture_of_ISIS._It_was_followed_up_and_institutionalized_by_two_eminent_Indian_International_law_scholars:_Prof._R.P._Anand_and_Prof._Rahmatullah_Khan_who_joined_ISIS_in_1965._Thus,_International_Law_program_became_a_‘spinal_cord’_in_the_larger_school_of_advanced_learning_that_came_to_be_popularly_known_as_International_Studies._It_showed_vision_of_the_early_founders_of_the_School_to_make_International_Law_indispensable_in_the_conduct_of_foreign_policy_and_international_relations._With_the_establishment_of_Jawaharlal_Nehru_University,_the_ISIS_merged_with_it_(1970)_and_was_re-designated_as_School_of_International_Studies_(SIS).

CILS_offers_specialized_Ph.D._Program_as_well_as_three_MA_Core_Courses_(International_Law_of_Peace,_Legal_Controls_of_International_Conflict_as_well_as_International_Law_&_Organization)_for_the_School’s_M.A._(PISM)_and_MA_(IRAS)_programs,_respectively._The_Centre_is_engaged_in_cutting-edge_research_on_International_Law_issues_of_historical,_contemporary_and_future_global_relevance._Over_the_years,_the_faculty_of_the_Centre_has_laid_special_emphasis_on_a_perspective_of_the_developing_countries_(now_called_the_Global_South)_and_contributed_in_shaping_the_global_discourses_in_various_areas_of_International_Law,_international_law-making_and_institution-building_processes_as_well_as_study_of_the_Indian_practice_in_joining_multilateral_treaties_and_international_organizations_in_furtherance_of_vital_national_interests._The_Centre_has_been_instrumental_in_promoting_the_usage_of_International_Law_language_(such_as_‘respect’;_‘commitment’;_‘at_work’;_‘taking_it_seriously;_‘making_it_work’)_both_within_India_and_the_world_at_large._The_study_areas_of_the_Centre_include_International_Law,_International_Trade_Law,_International_Economic_Law,_Law_of_International_Organization,_International_Environmental_Law,_Settlement_of_International_Disputes,_International_Human_Rights_Law,_International_Humanitarian_Law,_International_Criminal_Law,_International_Law_of_the_Sea,_Intellectual_Property_Law,_International_Air_&_Space_Law_and_Gender_in_International_Law.
