p{ text-align:justify; line-height:_19px; font-size:14px; margin-bottom:_15px_!important; } Time_Table_for_Monsoon_Semester_2024 The_Centre_for_East_Asian_Studies_is_one_of_the_thirteen_Centres_in_the_School_of_International_Studies,_Jawaharlal_Nehru_University,_New_Delhi._Initially,_established_as_a_Centre_for_Chinese_and_Japanese_Studies,_it_subsequently_grew_to_include_Korean_Studies_as_well. The_students_of_the_Centre_are_drawn_from_various_social_sciences_and_humanities_such_as_History,_Political_Science,_Economics,_Sociology,_International_Relations_and_Chinese,_Japanese_and_Korean_languages._The_academic_curriculum_covers_various_dimensions_of_modern_and_contemporary_East_Asia_–_China,_Japan,_and_Korea_–_one_of_the_most_dynamic_and_significant_regions_of_the_world_today._The_key_objective_is_to_impart_an_interdisciplinary_knowledge_and_understanding_of_the_foreign_policy,_government_and_politics,_society_and_culture_and_political_economy_of_the_respective_areas._Students_can_explore_new_and_emerging_themes_such_as_East_Asian_regionalism,_the_evolving_East_Asian_Community,_the_rise_of_China,_resurgence_of_Japan_and_the_prospects_for_reunification_of_the_Korean_peninsula._Additionally,_the_Centre_lays_great_emphasis_on_enhancing_language_skills._A_total_number_of_73_students_are_currently_registered_(about_41_in_Chinese_Studies,_13_in_Japanese_studies_and_14_in_Korean_Studies)_in_the_PhD._Programme. Currently,_there_are_fourteen_faculty_members_in_the_Centre._Each_faculty_member_specializes_and_teaches_courses_in_an_area_of_her/his_interest_in_the_region. Legacy Several_distinguished_faculty_who_taught_and_mentored_the_young_research_scholars_include_late_Prof._Gargi_Dutt,_late_Prof._P.A.N._Murthy,_late_Prof._G._P._Deshpande,_late_Prof._Naranarayan_Das,_late_Prof._R.R._Krishnan_and_late_Prof._K.V._Kesavan._Additionally,_Prof._Madhu_Bhalla,_(who_had_moved_to_Delhi_University_and_retired_from_there),_Prof._Lalima_Varma_(retd)_and_Prof._H.S._Prabhakar_(retd),_also_taught_at_the_Centre_at_various_periods_during_1994-2019._The_faculty_members_of_the_Centre_have_supervised_105_PhD_theses,_(Chinese_Studies_61,_Japanese_Studies_40,_and_Korean_Studies_4)_and_315_MPhil_dissertations_(Chinese_Studies_160,_Japanese_Studies_111,_and_Korean_Studies_44)_till_date._In_the_past,_Ms_Kamlesh_Jain,_and_Dr._M._M._Kunju,_both_now_retired,_served_as_the_Documentation_Officers_in_Chinese_and_Japanese_Studies_respectively_at_the_Centre. Student_Opportunities Several_students_of_the_Centre_have_been_recipients_of_prestigious_research_fellowships_awarded_by_Japan_Foundation,_Mombusho_(Ministry_of_Education,_Government_of_Japan),_Nichibunken_Fellowship,_JSPS,_Nippon_Foundation,_Korea_Foundation,_Korean_Government_Scholarship_(up_to_4_years)_under_the_India-Korea_Cultural_Cooperation_Agreement,_Academy_of_Korean_Studies_Scholarship_and_China_Government_Scholarship_(up_to_4_years)_under_the_India-China_Cultural_Cooperation_Agreement._Students_receive_fellowships_from_the_ICSSR_and_there_are_a_number_of_fellowships_and_research_opportunities_from_Taiwan._Apart_from_the_scholarships_for_higher_studies_and_research_available_at_the_University_level,_there_are_several_scholarships_available_specifically_for_area_studies_research._Several_grants_are_also_provided_for_field_work_at_the_University_level.
