Need_for _IT_Policy

IT_policies_and_guidelines_form_the_foundation_of_the_Institution’s_IT_security_program._Effective_policies_are_a_sign_of_due_diligence_and_are _often_necessary_in_the_event_of_an_IT_audit_or_litigation._Policies_also_serve_as_blueprints_that_help_the_institution_for _implementing _IT_security_measures.

IT_Policy_is_needed_for

  1. Proper_use_of_IT_resources_including_Internet_bandwidth
  2. Control_on_activities_on_the_university_network_that_are_neither _related_to_academic_work_nor_eGovernance_of_the_university.
  3. IT_Security
A _document_on_“IT_Policies_&_Guidelines”_has_been_prepared _that_would_be_relevant_in_the_context_of _our_university._This_document_was_discussed_in_the_Users’_Group_meeting,_and _subsequently_approved _by_the_competent_authority_of_the_university.

Further, _an_Implementation_Committee_comprising_Prof._Alok_Bhattacharya,_Dean,SIT, _Prof._R._Ramaswamy,_SPS,_Prof._Rakesh_Bhatnagar,_SBT_and_Prof._Ashok_K_Rastogi_,_Director,_CIS _was_formed_by_the_V.C.

This_Committee_had_its_first_meeting_on_6th_July,_2006.

What_does_"IT_Policies_&_Guidelines"_Document_Contain:

The_document_of _"Jawaharlal_Nehru_University_IT_Policies_and_Guidelines"_is_now_available_on_the_JNU_website_(Intranet).

IT_policies_are _classified_into_following_groups:

  • -_   _IT_Hardware_Installation _Policy
  • -_   _Software_Installation_and_Licensing_Policy
  • -    _Network_(Intranet_&_Internet)_Use_Policy
  • -_   _E-mail _Account_Use_Policy
  • -_   _Web_Site_Hosting_Policy
  • -_   _University_Database(of_eGovernance)_Use_Policy
Further,_responsibilities_of_the_CIS,_UCMC,_Schools/Centres_or_Departments,_and_the_different _Administrative_Units_are _also_elaborated.

This_document_also_gives_certain_guidelines_related_to_Computer_Naming_conventions,_running_Application_or_Information_Servers,_Hosting_web_Pages_and_Desktop_users.

At_the_end_of_the_IT_Policy_document, _an_Agreement_called_“_Campus_Network_Services_Use_Agreement”_is_attached._All_the_users_who_use_the_university_network_will_automatically_agree_to_abide_by_that.

A_few_application_forms_that_are_useful_for_getting_IP_address_allocated_for_the_Desktop/Laptop/server, _for_getting_the _Net_Access_ID_for_network_access,_and _for_Email_account_creation,_are_made_available_for_the_convenience_of_the_network_user_community.
