The_National_Service_Scheme_(NSS)_is_an_Indian_government-sponsored_public_service_program_conducted_by_the_Department_of_Youth_Affairs_and_Sports_of_the_Government_of_India._Popularly_known_as_NSS,_the_scheme_was_launched_in_Gandhiji's_Centenary_year,_1969._Aimed_at_developing_student's_personality_through_community_service,_NSS_is_a_voluntary_association_of_young_people_in_Colleges,_Universities_and_at_+2_level_working_for_a_campus-community_linkage

Motto

The_Motto_of_NSS_is_"Not_Me_but_You",_that_reflects_the_essence_of_democratic_living_and_upholds_the_need_for_selfless_service._The_philosophy_of_the_NSS_is_well_doctrinein_this_motto,_which_underlines_the_belief_that_the_welfare_of_an_individual_is_ultimately_dependent_on_the_welfare_of_the_society_on_the_whole_and_therefore,_the_NSS_volunteers_shall_strive_for_the_well-being_of_the_society.

History

The_National_Service_Scheme_(NSS)_is_Central_Government_sponsored_programme_falls_under_the_jurisdiction_of_Ministry_of_Youth_Affairs_and_Sports._Jawaharlal_Nehru_as_first_Prime_Minister_of_post-independent_India_played_a_very_important_role_in_introducing_NSS_in_academic_institutions._NSS_was_launched_in_Mahatma_Gandhi’s_Birth_Centenary_Year_1969,_in_37_Universities_involving_40,000_students._Mahatma_Gandhi_always_insisted_the_idea_that_students_and_youth_should_be_involved_in_the_nation_building_process_and_service_to_the_nation._He_suggested_that_instead_of_undertaking_academic_research_about_economic_and_social_disability,_the_students_should_do_“something_positive_so_that_the_life_of_the_villagers_might_be_raised_to_a_higher_material_and_moral_level”._Gandhiji_insisted_that_the_first_duty_of_the_students_should_be,_not_to_treat_their_period_of_study_as_one_of_the_opportunities_for_indulgence_in_intellectual_luxury,_but_for_preparing_themselves_for_final_dedication_in_the_service_of_those_who_provided_the_sinews_of_the_nation_with_the_national_goods_&_services_so_essential_to_society._Therefore,_fostering_social_responsibility,_inculcating_dedication,_commitment_to_solving_social_problems_and_developing_personality_through_community_service_are_the_main_aims_of_NSS._Today_NSS_has_grown_as_one_of_the_biggest_social_service_institution_and_youth_movement_in_the_world_with_more_than_38_lakhs_of_dedicated_volunteers_all_over_the_country_till_2016.

Objectives

The_broad_objectives_of_NSS_are_to:

1._Understand_the_community_in_which_they_work

2._Understand_themselves_in_relation_to_their_community;

3._Identify_the_needs_and_problems_of_the_community_and_involve_them_in_problem

Solving_process;

4._Develop_among_them_a_sense_of_social_and_civic_responsibility;

5._Utilize_their_knowledge_in_finding_practical_solution_to_individual_and_community

Problems;

6._Develop_competence_required_for_group_living_and_sharing_of_responsibilities;

7._Gain_skills_in_mobilizing_community_participation;

8._Acquire_leadership_qualities_and_democratic_attitude;

9._Develop_capacity_to_meet_emergencies_and_natural_disasters_and

10._Practice_national_integration_and_social_harmony.

Symbol

The_symbol_for_the_NSS_has_been_based_on_the_giant_Rath_Wheel_of_the_world_famous_Konark_Sun_Temple_(The_Black_Pagoda)_situated_in_Orissa,_India._The_wheel_portrays_the_cycle_of_creation,_preservation_and_release_and_signifies_the_movement_in_life_across_time_and_space._The_symbol_thus_stands_for_continuity_as_well_as_change_and_implies_the_continuous_striving_of_NSS_for_social_change.

Organization

At_national_level,_Ministry_of_Youth_Affairs_and_Sports_of_India_is_the_nodal_authority,_which_works_with_state-level_NSS_cells._State-level_NSS_cells_are_responsibility_of_the_respective_state_governments._Within_states,_each_university_has_University_level_NSS_cell_under_which_institutions_(schools_and_colleges)_based_NSS_units_operate._Most_government_and_government-aided_institutions_have_volunteer_NSS_units._Institutions_are_encouraged_to_have_NSS_volunteers._A_unit_typically_comprises_20–40_students._They_are_managed_internally_by_a_responsible_party_from_the_school_or_college,_who_reports_to_the_regional_NSS_coordinator._Most_institutions_do_not_have_a_separate_uniform_for_NSS_volunteers_as_there_is_standard_khakhi_colored_national_dress_for_NCC.

NSS_Badge

The_NSS_symbol_is_embossed_on_the_NSS_badge._The_NSS_volunteers_wear_it_while_undertaking_any_programme_of_community_service._The_Konark_wheel_in_the_symbol_has_eight_bars_which_represent_the_24_hours_of_the_day._Hence,_the_badge_reminds_the_wearer_to_be_in_readiness_for_service_of_the_nation_round_the_clock_i.e._for_24_hours._The_red_colour_in_the_badge_indicates_that_the_NSS_volunteers_are_full_of_blood_i.e._lively,_active,_energetic_and_full_of_high_spirit._The_navy_blue_colour_indicates_the_cosmos_of_which_the_NSS_is_a_tiny_part,_ready_to_contribute_its_share_for_the_welfare_of_the_humankind.

NSS_Day

NSS_was_formally_launched_on_24th_September,_1969,_the_birth_centenary_year_of_Mahatma_Gandhi,_the_Father_of_the_Nation._Therefore,_24th_September_is_celebrated_every_year_as_NSS_Day_with_appropriate_programmes_and_activities.

NSS_Song

During_Silver_Jubilee_Year_1994_the_NSS_theme_song_has_been_composed._All_NSS_volunteers_are_expected_to_learn_the_theme_song,_which_is_given_to_them_and_sing_the_song_during_NSS_programmes_and_celebrations.

Special_Emphasis_by_UGC_for_Expanding_NSS_at_Post-graduate_Level

In_2013_UGC_sent_letter_to_all_the_universities_strictly_instructing_to_expand_the_activities_of_NSS,_one_of_the_flagship_programmes_of_Department_of_Youth_Affairs,_to_post_graduate_level._The_UGC_letter_pointed_out_that_NSS,_a_programme_aimed_at_“education_through_social_service”,_in_the_review_of_Department_of_Youth_Affairs_revealed_that_the_scheme_has_enormous_potential_to_strengthen_knowledge,_develop_capacity_and_skill_of_students_in_a_number_of_social,_economic_and_development_areas._UGC_also_proposed_that_NSS_volunteers_should_be_adequately_rewarded_for_the_selfless_service_rendered_by_them._UGC_requested_the_universities_“to_recognize_the_NSS_as_a_co-curricular_activity_under_the_credit_based_semester_scheme_for_both_undergraduate_and_postgraduate_programmes_and_consider_giving_grace_marks_for_admission_to_graduate_and_postgraduate_levels.”_UGC_also_instructed_the_Universities_to_include_a_course_on_NSS_in_the_curriculum._The_sample_syllabus_for_the_same_also_distributed_to_universities_as_guidelines.

The_programme_aims_to_inculcate_social_welfare_in_students,_and_to_provide_service_to_society_without_bias._NSS_volunteers_work_to_ensure_that_everyone_who_is_needy_gets_help_to_enhance_their_standard_of_living_and_lead_a_life_of_dignity._In_doing_so,_volunteers_learn_from_people_in_villages_how_to_lead_a_good_life_despite_a_scarcity_of_resources._It_also_provides_help_in_natural_and_man-made_disasters_by_providing_food,_clothing_and_first_aid_to_the_disaster_victims.
