Periyar_Hostel_is_a_boys_hostel_named_after_the_river_Periyar_of_Kerala._It_was_constructed_in_the_early_1970’s_and_is_amongst_the_oldest_hostels_in_JNU._It_is_situated_in_Dakshinapuram_in_close_proximity_of_the_Godavari_and_Kaveri_Hostels._Its_residents_have_a_definite_advantage_over_many_other_hostels_due_to_its_appropriate_location._It_is_at_a_walking_distance_(within_500_-700m)_from_almost_all_the_major_facilities_in_the_campus_such_as_the_Academic_Complex,_the_Administrative_Complex,_the_University_Library,_University_Shopping_Centre,_University_Health_Centre,_Students_Activity_Centre_(having_indoor_badminton_court)_and_the_University_Stadium._The_State_Bank_of_India_equipped_with_three_ATMs_is_situated_right_next_to_it,_as_also_the_Neelgiri_shopping_complex_which_houses_several_useful_small_shops_such_as_the_cycle_repair_shop,_the_cobbler_shop,_the_fruit_juice_shop,_the_laundry_and_the_Neelgiri_Dhabha. The_hostel_has_two_wings_–_east_and_west,_each_having_four_floors_(i.e._Ground,_1st,_2nd_and_3rd),_with_disabled_friendly_structures_including_the_toilets._A_lift_is_also_expected_to_be_installed_shortly_in_the_west_wing_of_the_hostel_to_enable_the_disabled_students_to_access_their_rooms_with_ease._The_hostel_has_sufficient_water_supplies_for_its_residents,_with_an_underground_sump_for_water_storage._It_provides_mess_facility_to_its_residents_throughout_the_year,_and_has_several_facilities_such_as_the_Badminton_Court,_a_mini_Gym,_Table_Tennis_Room,_Reading_Room,_Common_Room_and_Visitor’s_Room,_to_offer_to_its_residents._The_hostel_also_has_power_back_facility_for_its_dining_hall_and_the_staircases_in_each_wing._A_number_of_Banyan_and_Neem_trees_within_its_premises_provide_it_a_green_ambience. The_residents_of_Periyar_Hostel_come_from_diverse_social,_economic,_cultural,_regional,_religious_and_educational_backgrounds_which_make_the_hostel_a_very_vibrant_place_for_debates,_discussions,_cultural_and_academic_activities,_enriching_the_residents_in_terms_of_their_personality_skills._Not_surprising,_alumni_of_Periyar_Hostel_have_been_successful_in_making_a_mark_for_themselves_in_various_spheres_of_life._During_the_hostel_night_celebrations_every_year,_the_hostel_organises_a_meeting_of_Periyar_Hostel_Alumni_in_addition_to_cultural_and_sports_activities._The_hostel_has_strong_democratic_traditions,_and_each_year_its_residents_elect_a_Hostel_President,_six_Hostel_Committee_Members_and_six_Mess_Secretaries_through_very_keenly_fought_elections_but_in_a_very_cordial_and_environment_friendly_(no_paper_usage_in_campaigning)_manner.
