1._Structure_of_the_Ph_D_programme
The_promotion_to_PhD_status_for_continuing_students_in_the_MPhil/PhD_programme_is_not_automatic._They_can_be_registered_only_for_a_provisional_PhD_until_their_MPhil_viva-voce_examination_is_conducted,_and_their_CGPA_is_thereafter_calculated._Only_those_students_who_have_a_minimum_CGPA_of_6.0_(General_Category)_and_5.5_(Reserved_Categories)_in_the_whole_MPhil_programme_will_be_allowed_to_continue_in_the_PhD_programme.
A_minimum_of_two_years_registration_is_required_before_a_PhD_thesis_can_be_submitted._This_applies_both_to_those_who_have_been_admitted_directly_for_a_PhD_as_well_as_to_those_who_have_been_promoted_to_PhD_status_on_the_basis_of_their_MPhil_performance._In_the_latter_case_the_two_year_period_will_be_counted_from_the_date_of_their_promotion_to_PhD.
Within_four_semesters_of_registering_for_a_provisional_PhD_(in_case_of_continuing_students)_or_PhD_(in_case_of_new_students),_a_synopsis_presentation_has_to_be_made_by_the_student_before_the_faculty_either_in_the_third_or_the_fourth_semester._The_synopsis_should_include_as_complete_an_idea_of_the_chapterisation_of_the_thesis,_a_brief_survey_of_the_historiography_and_sources,_and_a_detailed_discussion_of_one_chapter.
A_PhD_thesis_should_be_submitted_within_four_years_from_the_date_of_confirmation_to_the_PhD_programme._A_thesis_is_expected_to_be_not_less_than_80000_words._Students_may_refer_to_the_Style_Sheet.

In_case_a_student_requires_an_additional_year_to_complete_the_thesis,_s/he_can_apply_for_a_9B_during_the_eighth_semester._However_beyond_the_fifth_year_no_further_extension_is_possible._The_application_has_to_be_accompanied_by_a_hard_copy_of_atleast_three_or_four_complete_chapters_of_the_thesis.
If_after_completing_four_years,_a_student_is_not_in_a_position_to_submit_within_a_year,_then_s/he_should_deregister.
2._Calendar_for_the_PhD_programme
Students_in_their_third_semester_can_make_their_synopses_presentations_in_the_third_week_of_November.
Students_in_their_fourth_semester_have_to_make_their_synopses_presentations_in_the_fourth_week_of_April.
Students_in_their_eighth_semester_should_apply_for_a_year's_extension_under_clause_9B_either_in_April_or_October.
3._Online_Progress_Reports
Students_in_all_semesters_are_expected_to_fill_in_the_online_progress_report_form_before_the_end_of_each_semester_(5th_Dec_and_12th_May)._Please_submit_either_a_hard_or_a_soft_copy_to_your_respective_supervisors.
