The_Centre_began_its_teaching_and_research_program_in_1971._This_span_of_four_decades_has_seen_radical_shifts_in_global_political_and_cultural_systems,_bringing_with_them_the_need_to_rethink_the_focus_of_academic_programs._The_teaching_and_research_program_of_the_Centre_creatively_manifests_these_global_shifts_– while_a_decade_ago,_the_end_of_the_Second_World_War_and_of_fascism_in_Germany,_as_well_as_post_war_thought_and_literature_in_German_speaking_countries_were_a_focus_of_research_at_the_Centre,_today_the_historical_landmarks_defining_research_at_the_Centre_are_the_fall_of_the_Berlin_wall,_the_reunification_of_the_two_Germanies,_and_the_present_day_location_of_some_of_the_German_speaking_countries_within_the_EU_experiment,_as_well_as_the_related_cultural,_social,_and_political_expressions_of_the_same._It_is_this_framework_that_informs_our_teaching_and_research_concerns_today,_seen_in_our_BA,_MA,_MPhil,_and_PhD_programs,_as_well_as_in_the_diverse_teaching_and_research_interests_of_faculty_members._Besides_these_programs_of_study,_the_Centre_also_offers_a_4_Semester_Optional_in_German_Language_to_B.A._students_of_other_Languages. The_BA_program While_equipping_our_students_with_a_sound_knowledge_of_the_German_language,_we_seek_to_expose_them_to_the_cultural,_political,_and_literary_history_of_German_speaking_countries._Through_a_multidisciplinary_approach,_the_BA_program_serves_as_a_foundation_for_harnessing_students’ interests_to_open_avenues_for_further_postgraduate_study_and_research. _In_the_first_year_of_the_program_students_are_offered_intensive_training_in_the_German_language,_along_with_a_tool_course_in_the_cultural_and_political_history_of_German_speaking_countries_after_1945,_taught_in_English._In_the_second_year,_along_with_training_in_the_language,_students_complete_courses_in_cultural_and_political_history_of_German_speaking_countries_in_German,_a_tool_course_in_English_that_deals_with_cultural_history_of_the_region,_beginning_with_the_early_modern_period,_and_an_introduction_to_post_Second_World_War_literature._In_the_third_year,_following_upon_our_multidisciplinary_framework,_we_offer_introductory_courses_in_linguistics_and_translation,_along_with_literary_and_social_history. Apart_from_the_core_courses_in_the_discipline_as_mentioned_above,_students_are_also_expected_to_complete_a_minimum_of_22_credits_in_the_form_of_optional_courses._These_courses_are_offered_by_departments_within_the_School_and_by_the_School_of_International_Studies_and_the_School_of_Social_Sciences,_as_well_as_other_special_centres._The_University_has_made_this_special_provision_for_undergraduate_students_of_our_School_with_the_objective_of_exposing_them_to_other_disciplines,_and_in_keeping_with_the_academic_framework_of_the_University_which_sees_itself_as_fostering_interdisciplinary_research._We_find_that_these_courses_enhance_students’_academic_as_well_as_cultural_and_social_experience_within_the_university. The_MA_program The_Centre_of_German_Studies_is_among_the_first_departments_to_offer_separate_degrees_in_Literature,_Translation,_and_Translation/Interpretation._Translation_studies_and_intensive_courses_in_interpretation_are_among_the_strengths_of_our_Centre._These_specializations_are_offered_at_the_beginning_of_the_program,_when_students_choose_one_of_these_areas_of_specialization._ Courses_offered_as_part_of_the_MA_in_Literature_engage_closely_with_contemporary_literatures_from_German_speaking_countries._They_also_focus_variously_on_particular_authors,_literary_movements,_genres,_and_periods_in_literary_history._Courses_in_theories_of_literature_provide_students_with_the_opportunity_to_read_critical_texts_which_also_form_the_theoretical_basis_of_the_literature_curriculum._ The_MA_in_Translation_and_Translation/Interpretation_offers_a_broad_spectrum_of_courses,_ranging_from_the_conventional_to_the_innovative,_thereby_providing_students_the_choice_of_becoming_professionally_competent_translators/interpreters_or_entering_the_equally_challenging_and_rewarding_arena_of_research_in_Translation_Studies._Many_skills_acquired_in_the_course_of_fulfilling_the_requirements_of_the_programme,_facilitate_entry_into_related_areas,_such_as_technical_writing_and_editing._Students_are_not_only_exposed_to_issues_in_translation_of_both_specialized_and_non-specialized_texts,_but_to_considerations_in_literary_translation._Courses_in_the_theory_and_methodology_of_translation_seek_to_fortify_the_practice_of_translation_with_a_grasp_of_historical_debates_within_translation_studies._Students_who_choose_to_specialize_further_in_interpretation,_are_offered_courses_in_both_consecutive_and_simultaneous_interpretation._ Within_this_program,_we_also_offer_a_range_of_common_courses,_which_seek_to_consolidate_and_supplement_what_students_learn_in_their_respective_specializations._Keeping_in_mind_possible_avenues_that_open_up_before_students,_and_the_choices_they_may_seek_to_make,_courses_in_didactics_of_the_German_language_as_well_as_literature_are_offered._Another_strength_of_the_program_are_the_courses_in_the_cultural_and_political_history_of_key_periods_in_the_history_of_German_speaking_countries_as_well_as_on_the_location_of_Germany_within_the_European_Union._In_continuation_of_introductory_courses_in_the_final_year_of_the_BA_program,_the_common_courses_include_also_an_introduction_to_contrastive_linguistics._New_courses_in_culture_studies,_including_folklore_studies_are_also_offered. Over_the_third_and_fourth_semester_of_the_MA,_students_are_expected_to_write_a_dissertation_on_an_area_of_their_choice._
Academic_cooperation_and_other_activities_of_the_Centre Apart_from_permanent_faculty_members_whose_teaching_interests_span_literary,_cultural,_and_political_history,_translation_studies,_history_of_ideas,_linguistics,_and_didactics,_the_Centre_also_hosts_a_full_faculty_member_through_cooperation_with_the_DAAD,_as_well_as_a_language_teacher._ Recent_years_have_seen_intensified_collaborations_and_academic_cooperation_with_universities_in_Germany_and_Austria._We_have_student_and_faculty_exchanges_with,_amongst_others, _the_Universities_of_Köln_and_Wuppertal,_the_Freie_Universität,_Berlin,_and _the_University_of_Konstanz_in_Germany._ There_is_a_range_of_short_term_scholarships_for_students_to_pursue_courses_in_German_universities,_some_of_which_have_resulted_from_our_academic_cooperation,_both_at_the_Centre_and_University_level._ We_also_have_a_small_theatre_program,_through_which_students,_particularly_of_the_BA_program,_are_encouraged_to_stage_a_play_at_the_end_of_their_academic_year.The_Centre_has_a_small_reference_library_with_around_5000_books._Books_in_this_library_have_been_given_to_the_Centre_either_by_individuals,_or_acquired_through_other_co-operations,_like_the_German_Research_Foundation_and_the_Passage_to_India_cooperation_funded_by_the_German_Academic_Exchange.
