p { font-size:14px_!important; text-align:justify; line-height:_19px; margin-bottom:_10px_!important; } COMMUNICATION_&_INFORMATION_SERVICES In_1996_JNU_initiated_efforts_for_setting_up_a_campus-wide_computer_network_in_the_academic_complex_of_the_university._The_network_was_carefully_planned,_keeping_options_in_mind_for_future_expansions,_using_fiber-optic_cabling_to_connect_all_the_major_buildings._Given_the_extent_of_the_work,_it_was_decided_then_that_a_separate_centre_was_needed_to_look_after_Network_Operations_centrally._This_led_to_the_formation_of_the_CIS. The_Communications_&_Information_Services_Centre_was_set_up_in_February_1997_as_an_independent_Centre_headed_by_a_senior_professor_as_the_Director._By_May_1997,_the_site_was_ready,_and_it_started_functioning_with_a_small_workforce_of_about_half_a_dozen_select_persons_drawn_from_different_departments. CIS_launched_the_official_University_website, www.jnu.ac.in in_1997. In_2001,_CIS_became_part_of_the_School_of_Information_Technology._The_focus_of_the_SIT_is_on_the_use_of_information_technology_in_education_and_research,_and_the_study_of_how_increased_availability_of_information_in_all_spheres_of_enquiry---biological,_geographical,_economic_etc.---can_be_effectively_utilized_in_an_academic_context. The_bandwidth_has_been_rising_gradually._In_2002,_the Internet bandwidth_was_increased_to_2_Mbps._This_doubled_in_2003,_tripled_in_2004,_and Intranet bandwidth_went_up_to_1Gbps_in_2005._JNU_had_20_Mbps_of_Internet_bandwidth_coming_from_two_different_ISPs_and_integrated_at_our_end_to_give_seamless_access_from_both_the_ISPs. Presently,_the_University_has_the_bandwidth_of_10Gbps_through_National_Knowledge_Network_(NKN). CIS_has_a_firewall_software_that_both_protects_the_JNU_network_from_outside_hackers,_and_in_addition_can_balance_the_load_that_we_get_from_separate_fibre_one_through_MTNL_fibre_and_another_through_the_Power_grid_fibre._A_Unified_Threat_Management_Solution_has_been_implemented_to_further_secure_the_network_from_hackers,_for_filtering_unnecessary_traffic,_streamlining_traffic_by_specifying_priorities,_and_blocking_unwanted_sites. Mail_software_has_been_upgraded_to_Groupwise_8.0_that_has_many_additional_features_that_are_useful_for_the_academic_community._Instant_messaging,_document_sharing,_archiving_the_personal_mailboxes_by_the_individuals_would_be_possible_with_this_new_software._Additional_hardware_is_being_procured_during_this_year_for_making_mail_server_more_stable_with_a_high_capacity_common_storage_and_a_cluster_configuration_of_servers. In_August_2011,_The_Vice-Chancellor_approved_the_re-structuring_of_Communication_&_Information_Services_(CIS)_by_merging_the_Technical_&_Computer_staff_working_in_CIS, E-Governance & University_Computer_Maintenance_Cell_(UCMC) for_smooth_functioning_of_E-Governance_&_network_related_activities.
