Nutritionally_Improved_Rice_fortified_with_High_Lysine

 

In_the_major_cereal_grains_(wheat,_rice,_maize_etc.),_which_represent_the_largest_source_of_food_and_feed_worldwide,_lysine_is_the_most_limiting_essential_amino_acid_and_it_is_therefore_considered_as_a_nutritionally_significant_amino_acid._Rice_is_the_most_important_staple_food_for_a_large_part_of_world's_population,_especially_in_East_and_South_Asia,_the_Middle_East,_Latin_America,_and_the_West_Indies._Rice_grains_are_deficient_in_certain_essential_amino_acids,_especially_lysine._Lysine_plays_a_major_role_in_calcium_absorption;_building_muscle_protein;_recovering_from_surgery_or_sport_injuries;_and_production_of_hormones,_enzymes_and_antibodies._It_also_helps_to_prevent_herpes_and_osteoporosis._Lysine_deficiency_results_in_appetite_loss,_poor_growth,_fatigue,_anemia_etc._We_need_51_milligrams_of_lysine,_also_called_L-lysine,_for_each_gram_of_protein_we_eat._Therefore,_the_average_woman_should_get_approximately_2.3_grams_of_lysine_per_day,_and_the_average_man_should_get_about_2.8_grams._Lysine_promotes_proper_organ_development_and_muscle_growth._It_helps_in_production_of_carnitine,_a_nutrient_responsible_for_converting_fatty_acids_into_energy_and_helping_our_body_to_lower_the_cholesterol._Therefore,_efforts_are_being_made_to_improve_the_nutritional_quality_of_rice_with_high_lysine_content._In_light_of_these_implications,_we_have_done_metabolic_engineering_in_rice_to_increase_its_lysine_contents._It_is_also_estimated_that_increasing_lysine_content_could_increase_the_gross_value_of_rice_in_world_feed_market._A_patent_application_for_this_IPR_protection_has_been_filed.

The_Pregnane_&_Xenobiotic_Receptor_(PXR;_NR1I2),_a_member_of_the_nuclear_receptor_super-family,_is_a_well-known_xenobiotic_sensing_receptor._The_highly_promiscuous_nature_of_PXR_allows_it_to_interact_with_a_wide_range_of_structurally_diverse_chemicals._Ligand-activated_PXR_up-regulates_the_expression_of_drug-metabolizing_enzymes_and_drug_transporters_to_protect_the_cell_from_chemical_insults._However,_the_physiological_importance_of_PXR_extends_beyond_xenobiotic_protection._Most_importantly,_the_regulation_of_drug-metabolizing_enzymes_by_PXR_may_result_in_clinical_drug–drug_interactions,_in_which_one_drug_accelerates_the_metabolism_of_a_second_medication_and_may_change_or_cause_adverse_results._This_not_only_reduces_the_therapeutic_efficacy_of_many_drugs_on_combination_therapy_but_may_also_cause_life-threatening_situations._Therefore,_the_complete_evaluation_and_safety_assessment_of_any_drug_(clinical_or_herbal)_which_is_to_be_administered_is_indispensable. _Although_there_are_various_methods,_which_are_available_to_assess_the_pharmacological_properties_by_drug_screening,_but_due_to_their_high_cost,_lengthy_experimental_duration_offers_only_limited_use.In_this_context,_a_cell_based_screening_approach_for_evaluating_the_therapeutic_value_and_safety_assessment_of_clinical_or_herbal_drugs,_xenobiotics_and_endobiotics_are_capable_of_being_addressed_at_two_main_levels_by_engaging_(i)_PXR_protein_based_or_(ii)_PXR-promoter_based_transcription_assays:
