Jean_Drèze:_Visiting_Professor_CIS&LS

Jean_Drèze_studied_Mathematical_Economics_at_the_University_of_Essex_and_did_his_PhD_at_the_Indian_Statistical_Institute,_New_Delhi._He_has_taught_at_the_London_School_of_Economics_and_the_Delhi_School_of_Economics,_and_is_currently_a_Visiting_Professor_at_Centre_for_Informal_Sector_and_Labour_Studies,_School_of_Social_Sciences,_Jawaharlal_Nehru_University._He_is_also_a_visiting_Professor_at_Allahabad_University_as_well_as_Honorary_Professor_at_the_Delhi_School_of_Economics._He_has_made_wide-ranging_contributions_to_development_economics_and_public_policy,_with_special_reference_to_India._His_research_interests_include_rural_development,_social_inequality,_elementary_education,_child_nutrition,_health_care_and_food_security.

    Gerry_Rodgers_is_the_former_director_of_the_Institute_for_International_Labor_Studies_at_the_ILO._He_is_currently_a_Visiting_Professor_at_Centre_for_Informal_Sector_and_Labour_Studies,_School_of_Social_Sciences,_Jawaharlal_Nehru_University_and_also_a_Visiting_Fellow_at_Institute_of_Human_Development,_New_Delhi._His_work_has_mainly_been_concerned_with_poverty,_inequality,_labor,_human_resources,_and_employment,_especially_in_South_and_Southeast_Asia_and_in_Latin_America._This_has_included_analysis_of_labor_market_outcomes_and_their_relationship_to_economic_development;_the_impact_on_poverty_and_employment_of_state_policies_and_of_the_behavior_of_other_social_actors;_labor_market_patterns_as_aspects_of_social_and_economic_inequality;_the_development_of_training_systems_and_policies;_the_notion_of_social_exclusion_and_its_application_in_low_income_settings;_studies_of_interactions_between_economic_and_demographic_behavior;_work_on_economic_and_social_systems_and_models,_both_theoretical_and_empirical.

    Professor_Barbara_Harriss-White:_Visiting_Professor_CIS&LS MA_(Oxon),_Dip.Ag.Sc._(Ag.Econ.)_(Cantab),_PhD

    Professor_Barbara_Harriss-White_is_the_Director_of_Wolfson_College's_South_Asia_Research_Cluster_and_of_Area_Studies_Research_Project_on_the_Materiality_of_India's_Informal_Economy_at_Oxford_University._She_is_Emeritus_Professor_of_Development_Studies,_Emeritus_Fellow_of_Wolfson_College,_Oxford,_and_a_Professorial_Research_Associate_at_SOAS._She retired_in_2011_after_25_years_at_Oxford,_almost_all_in_Queen_Elizabeth_House_teaching_agricultural_economics,_development_economics,_development_studies_and_then_the_political_economy_of_India. She_was_the_Founder-Director_of_Oxford_University's_Contemporary_South_Asian_Studies_Programme_in_the_School_of_Area_Studies_and_organiser_of_the_world's_first_MSc_in_Contemporary_India._She_has_written,_edited_or_co-edited_and_published_40_books_and_major_reports,_published_over_200_scholarly_papers_and_chapters_and_over_60_working_papers._Her_book_'Rural_Commercial_Capital'_won_the_Edgar_Graham_prize.

    Barbara_Harriss-White's_research_interests_have_developed_from_the_economics_of_agricultural_markets_to_India's_socially_regulated_capitalist_economy_and_corporate_capital;_and_from_the_malnutrition_caused_by_markets_to_many_other_aspects_of_deprivation:_notably_poverty,_gender_bias_and_gender_relations,_health_and_disability,_destitution_and_caste_discrimination._She_has_a_long_term_interest_in_agrarian_change_in_S._India_and_has_also_tracked_the_economy_of_a_market_town_there_since_1972.
