MA_in_Sociology
The_Master's_degree_program_in_Sociology_is_oriented_towards_the_study_of_social_systems,_sociological_theories,_research_methodology_and_other_areas_of_study_like_sociology_of_knowledge,_sociology_of_professions,_social_psychology,_anthropological_theories,_sociology_of_gender,_cultural_studies,_Indian_social_thought,_ethnic_minorities_and_marginal_social_groups,_social_ecology,_social_demography_and_sociology_of_science/medicine_etc.
Several_courses_offered_at_the_Centre_are_inter-disciplinary_and_are_drawn_from_anthropology,_psychology,_economics,_political_science_and_history._In_addition,_courses_at_the_Master's_level_also_incorporate_problems_relating_to_globalization,_development,_mass_media_and_social_change_etc._Out_of_16_courses_offered,_8_are_in_the_areas_of_sociological_theories,_thinkers_and_methodology,_and_the_remaining_8_focus_on_different_aspects_of_Indian_society_such_as_social_stratification,_family_life_and_kinship,_polity,_economy,_religion,_urban_life,_population,_education_and_social_change._16_optional_courses_are_also_offered_from_which_the_students_have_to_choose_5_(the_students_are_also_encouraged_to_opt_for_some_courses_in_the_related_disciplines_from_other_Centre's_of_the_School).
In_addition_to_a_number_of_merit-cum-means_scholarships,_the_Centre_grants_annually_the_"T_K_OOMMEN_AWARD"_to_the_topper_of_the_MA_program

Note:_All_MA_courses_carry_4_credits_each._To_qualify_for_the_MA_degree,_students_are_required_to_complete_a_total_of_16_courses,_out_of_which_11_are_compulsory._As_stipulated_under_Clause_9.5_of_the_Ordinance_relating_to_the_Award_of_MA_degree,_a_student_in_order_to_be_eligible_for_the_award_of_Master's_degree_of_the_University_must_have_fulfilled_the_following_requirements:
a. _ She/he_has_taken_and_passed_all_the_prescribed_courses_as_laid_down;_and
b. _ She/he_has_obtained_a_CGPA_of_4_at_the_end_of_the_program
Provided_further_that_the_students_of_MA_program_who_are_otherwise_eligible_for_award_of_degree_but_have_secured_a_CGPA_less_then_6_at_the_end_of_the_permissible_period_of_four_semesters_may_be_allowed_by_the_Centre/School_concerned_to_repeat_MA_level_courses_in_the_5th_and_the_6th_semester,_as_per_provisions_contained_in_Clause_8.6_of_the_Ordinance_for_improvement_of_CGPA.

At_the_request_of_the_School_of_Languages,_Literature_and_Cultural_Studies,_the_Centre_has_been_offering_2_optional_courses_in_Sociology_and_Social_Anthropology_for_the_undergraduate_students_since_1997:
