The_Centre_for_Linguistics_is_one_of_the_leading_centres_for_linguistics_and_language_studies_in_India._The_Centre_focuses_on_core_areas_such_as_phonetics,_phonology,_morphology_and_syntax,_as_well_as_on_areas_in_interdisciplinary_language_studies_such_as_neuro-cognitive_linguistics_and_sociolinguistics._The_Centre_is_known_for_having_had_expertise_in_Field_Methods,_Semiotics_and_Indian_linguistic_tradition_for_the_past_several_years._Some_of_the_other_areas_of_research_by_the_faculty_include_language_typology_and_sign_language,_with_bio-linguistics_being_an_emerging_area_of_some_common_interest._The_research_conducted_in_the_centre_has_resulted_in_descriptive_grammars_of_some_of_the_lesser_known_languages_of_Indo-Aryan,_Dravidian,_Austro-Asiatic_including_Munda,_Tibeto-Burman_and_Andamanese. The_Centre_in_its_present_form_was_constituted_in_2005,_but_had_existed_since_1974_as_a_group_of_Linguistics_which_merged_with_the_Group_of_English_and_constituted_the_Centre_of_Linguistics_and_English_in_1978._The_Centre_has_an_intake_of_20_M.A.,_14_M._Phil._and_3_direct_Ph.D._students_every_year._The_M.A._programme_gives_students_a_grounding_in_the_foundational_courses_in_theoretical_and_applied_linguistics_as_well_as_it_trains_students_in_writing_grammars,_dictionaries_and_sociolinguistic_profiles_of_a_speech_community._The_Centre_for_Linguistics_is_the_only_centre_in_the_country_that_facilitates_field_research_in_the_remote_areas_at_M.A._level.
The_M._Phil_/_Ph.D._programme_is_a_rich_and_rewarding_research_programme_open_to_post-graduate_students_from_any_discipline._Apart_from_the_post-graduate_courses,_the_Centre_also_offers_2-3_optional_and_tool_courses_in_linguistics_to_undergraduate_students_of_the_School_of_Language,_Literature_and_Culture_Studies_every_semester.
The_selection_process_followed_for_Indian_students_and_foreign_students_in_India_is_that_of_JNU_as_a_whole,_which_holds_entrance_tests_at_around_65_centres_in_India_and_the_neighboring_countries_including_Bangladesh,_Nepal_and_Sri_Lanka._Applications_from_foreign_students_from_abroad_are_considered_through_the_office_of_the_Coordinator_directly_by_the_Centre_on_the_basis_of_merit.
The_Centre_shares_facilities_of_digital_language_labs_with_other_Centres_of_the_School._It_also_has_software_for_experimental_phonetic_studies_and_neuro-cognitive_studies,_and_will_have_from_the_Monsoon_Semester_2007_a_well-equipped_computer_class-room.
