p { font-size:14px_!important; text-align:justify; line-height:_19px; margin-bottom:_10px_!important; } MA_Courses_offered_for_the_Winter_Semester_2023 Schedule_for_MA_(English)_IInd_and_IVth_Semester_Classes_-_Winter_Semester_2023 PhD_Courses_offered_for_the_Monsoon_Semester_2022 The_Centre_for_English_Studies,_formerly_part_of_the_Centre_for_Linguistics_and_English,_which_was_formally_bi-furcated_in_2006,_has_the_well-earned_reputation_of_being_one_of_the_foremost_sites_for_postgraduate_work_and_research_in_English_Studies_in_India._The_annual_entrance_examination_for_the_M.A._course_in_English,_for_example,_attracts_more_than_2,400_candidates_from_all_over_India,_and_even_from_foreign_countries,_every_year._We_select_only_about_30_(or_less_than_1.5%)_for_admission._The_Centre_has_gained_national_and_international_prestige_for_being_a_vibrant_place_of_intellectual_activity_with_lectures,_seminars,_colloquiums_and_visits_by_creative_writers_and_academics_from_all_over_the_world. The_Centre_is_also_well_known_for_its_progressive_and_innovative_outlook_towards_teaching_and_research_in_the_fields_of_language_and_literature_studies_in_English_and_for_comparative_literary_and_cultural_studies._Our_M.Phil._and_Ph.D._research_programmes_are_widely_recognized_for_their_inter-disciplinary_approach._This_Centre_was_one_of_the_first_in_Asia_to_question_the_centrality_of_the_British_canon_and_introduce_courses_on_“New_Literatures”_like_American,_African,_Canadian,_Australian,_Indian_English,_and_others._Translation_Studies_has_had_an_important_place_in_our_programmes_right_from_the_beginning._Our_programmes_seek_to_develop_in_the_students_an_ability_to_relate_literature(s)_to_the_Indian_context,_to_compare_literary_theories_and_texts,_and_to_explore_the_ways_in_which_history,_ideology_and_material_forces_condition_literary_texts._Also,_the_Centre_has_long_been_offering_courses_on_Paņini’s_Ashtādhyāyi,_Bhartŗhari’s_Vākyapadīya,_Bharata’s_Nātyaśāstra_and_the_Indian_grammatical_traditions._The_aim_is_to_familiarize_students_with_their_own_cultural_and_intellectual_heritage_in_order_to_provide_them_with_a_balanced_viewpoint_when_approaching_predominantly_Western_literary_and_theoretical_and_critical_texts._While_we_constantly_innovate_(our_recent_course_on_Disability_Studies_is_another_example),_teachers,_students_and_research_scholars_have_always_emphasized_on_developing_a_modern_Indian_methodology_for_English_Studies,_keeping_in_mind_the_growing_competitive_international_standards_as_well_as_our_location_within_a_long_and_rich_Indian_intellectual_tradition_in_all_its_complexity_and_historical_depth. It_is_therefore_befitting_that_the_Centre_was_recognized_under_the_Special_Assistance_Programme_(SAP)_of_the_University_Grants_Commission_(UGC)_as_a_Department_of_Special_Assistance_with_the_thrust_area_"Indo-Centric_Approach_to_Literary_Studies."_We_see_this_as_both_a_continuation_of_our_work_as_well_as_a_new_challenge_to_develop_an_independent_mode_of_critical_engagement_with_what_is_predominantly_a_Euro-centric_discipline_and_academy._The_Special_Assistance_Programme_extended_by_the_UGC_to_the_Centre_has_therefore_been_a_much-needed_and_much-appreciated_boost_to_the_efforts_of_the_Centre._The_Centre's_work_under_this_programme_has_been_appreciated_and_we_have_been_sanctioned_the_second_phase_of_the_programme_with_a_focus_on_"Indian_and_Cross-cultural_Approaches_to_Marginal_Literatures". We_also_offer_courses_in_English_language_and_literature_for_undergraduate_students_of_other_centres_in_the_School._The_Remedial_English_course_we_offer_for_the_university_is_always_in_demand_is_found_useful_by_a_wide_range_of_students_from_various_disciplines.
