SYNTHETIC_ANALOG_CIRCUIT_DESIGN_IN_LIVING_CELLSBy_:_Professor_Rahul_Sarpeshkar_is_currently_the_Thomas_E._Kurtz_Professor_at_Dartmouth_College_and_a_Professor_of_Engineering,_Microbiology_and_Immunology,_Physics,_and_Physiology_and_Neurobiology._His_longstanding_and_frequent_work_in_analog_and_biological_computation,_his_book,_Ultra_Low_Power_Bioelectronics:_Fundamentals,_Biomedical_Applications,_and_Bio-inspired_Systems,_and_his_most_recent_publications_have_pioneered_the_pioneered_the_field_of_Analog_Synthetic_Biology._This_content_will_form_the_basis_of_the_course.
His_unique_interdisciplinary_research_creates_both_wet_DNA-protein_and_dry_electronic_analog_circuits,_many_of_which_have_achieved_world_records._He_holds_over_36_awarded_patents_and_has_authored_more_than_127_publications,_including_one_that_was_featured_on_the_cover_of_Nature.
He_has_won_several_awards_for_his_interdisciplinary_work_including_the_NSF_Career_award,_the_ONR_Young_Investigator_award,_and_the_Packard_Fellow_award_given_to_outstanding_faculty._His_work_on_a_glucose_fuel_cell_for_medical_implants_was_featured_by_BBC_Radio,_the_Economist,_and_listed_among_Scientific_American’s_top_ten_breakthroughs_of_2012._Professor_Sarpeshkar_obtained_Bachelor’s_degrees_in_Electrical_Engineering_and_Physics_at_MIT._After_completing_his_PhD_at_CalTech,_he_joined_Bell_Labs_as_a_physics_member_of_technical_staff_in_their_department_of_biological_computation._Before_joining_Dartmouth,_he_was_a_tenured_professor_at_MIT_for_several_years.

Living_cells_use_DNA-RNA-protein_circuits_to_perform_sensing,_actuating,_computing,_and_control_functions_with_amazing_energy_and_part-count_efficiency._They_use_noisy_and_unreliable_parts_to_perform_reliable_computation_with_probabilistic_digital_and_collective_analog_strategies._The_complexity_of_computation_within_the_~30,000-node_nonlinear,_stochastic,_feedback_dynamical_system_in_a_single_cell_is_so_staggering_that_our_attempts_to_engineer_cells_(synthetic_biology)_or_to_understand_their_function_and_malfunction_(systems_biology_and_medicine)_are_still_in_their_infancy_after_decades_of_research._The_treatment_of_several_diseases_from_cholera_to_cancer_would_be_revolutionized_if_we_had_a_principled_way_to_design_and_analyze_circuits_in_living_cells.
Based_on_the_astounding_similarities_between_the_mathematical_equations_that_govern_biochemical_reaction_flux_and_electron_transport_in_subthreshold_transistors,_both_of_which_obey_the_Boltzmann_laws_of_thermodynamics,_it_is_possible_to_map_analog_electronic_circuits_to_analog_bio-molecular_circuits_and_vice_versa_in_a_principled_fashion._Digital_circuits_comprise_a_special_case_and_are_automatically_included_as_well._Founded_on_these_similarities,_this_course_will_introduce_the_basics_of_a_cytomorphic_approach_for_designing_circuits_in_cells_based_on_analog_transistor_circuit_design.
The_course_is_offered_by_Prof._Rahul_Sarpeshkar,_who_has_pioneered_the_fields_of_analog_synthetic_biology_and_cytomorphic_electronics._His_work_on_analog_circuits_and_analog_computaiton_has_had_and_continues_to_have_several_applications_in_biotechnology,_implantable_medical_devices,_microbiology_and_immunology,_and_bio-inspired_and_ultra-energy-efficient_systems.
