The_Centre_for_the_Study_of_Regional_Development_was_established_in_1971_with_a_mandate_to_focus_on_interdisciplinary_programme_of_studies_for_teaching_and_research,_placed_in_an_overall_framework_of_regional_development_in_India._Over_the_years,_an_interdisciplinary_team_of_scholars_is_engaged_in_realizing_this_dream..
The_Centre_offers_M._A._(Geography)_and_M._Phil/Ph.D._programmes_in_three_major_fields:_Economics,_Geography_and_Population_Studies._In_keeping_with_the_interdisciplinary_tenor_and_focus_of_the_Centre,_these_programmes_interface_socio-_economic,_human,_institutional,_technological,_infrastructural_and_environmental_factors_with_issues_of_regional_development_in_multi-various_and_pluralistic_manner._In_doing_so,_research_and_teaching_in_the_Centre_over_the_years_have_evolved_appropriate_paradigms_and_tools_of_analyses_including_remote_sensing_and_GIS.
The_M._A._Geography_curriculum_in_the_Centre_is_unique_in_terms_of_a_judicious_mix_of_courses_which_combine_the_classical_with_the_modern_and_the_theoretical_with_the_practical_in_response_to_emerging_disciplinary_challenges,_particularly_in_the_Indian_context._In_the_classical_traditions_in_geography,_fieldwork_occupies_a_prime_place._The_M._A._students_are_exposed_to_two_compulsory_courses_that_are_exclusively_based_on_physical_and_social_field_surveys._Apart_from_getting_trained_in_specific_methodologies_and_gaining_first_hand_field_observations_-often_in_rural_settings_-_prolonged_group_living_under_spartan_conditions_helps_students_develop_interpersonal_skills_and_mutual_interdependencies_and_team_spirit.
In_terms_of_students_and_faculty_strength,_the_Centre_for_the_Study_of_Regional_Development_is_one_of_the_largest_centres_in_the_School_of_Social_Sciences_in_the_University._The_Centre_presently_has_two_Professors_Emeritus,_nine_Professors,_ten_Associate_Professors,_and_three_Assistant_Professors._The_research_and_post-graduate_students_in_the_Centre_form_an_important_academic_hub_of_the_Centre._Apart_from_supporting_regular_and_remedial_teaching_programmes,_as_well_as_co-curricular_activities_of_the_Centre,_research_students_have_presented_papers_in_a_number_of_national_and_international_conferences_in_India_and_abroad._They_have_also_published_in_leading_academic_journals._Students_of_the_Centre_have_visited_Queen's_university,_Belfast,_UK_and_the_University_of_Kaiserslautern,_Germany,_under_exchange_programmes_of_the_Centre._Students_from_these_foreign_universities,_have_in_turn,_visited_the_Centre_and_have_benefited_from_its_teaching_programmes_and_other_activities.
The_Centre_for_the_Study_of_Regional_Development_was_granted_the_status_of_'Centre_of_Advanced_Studies'_(CAS)_under_the_Special_Assistance_Program_(SAP)_of_the_UGC_in_April_2003._With_this,_the_Centre_became_the_first_department_in_Geography_in_India_to_get_this_status._In_view_of_the_Centre_having_successfully_completed_the_first_phase,_the_support_as_CAS_was_renewed_in_April_2009_for_a_period_of_five_years_(2009-March_2014)._The_CAS_has_enabled_us_to_enhance_our_teaching_and_research_activities_in_continuing_as_well_as_new_research_areas_including_building_up_of_infrastructural_facilities._The_thrust_areas_identified_for_the_Second_Phase_are:_Advanced_Remote_Sensing_and_GIS,_Climate_Change_and_Disaster_Management,_Natural_Resource_Management,_Globalization/Urbanization/Population,_and_Regional_Disparities_and_Social_Exclusion.
The_teaching_and_research_activities_of_the_Centre_are_supported_by_professional_and_technical_staff_and_the_centre_is_equipped_with_necessary_infrastructure_for_this_purpose._The_Centre_has_a_Documentation_Centre_and_six_laboratories._The_Centre_is_maintaining_the_School's_Computer_Unit_and_has_a_laboratory_for_computer_aided_GIS_and_cartography.
