The_Centre_for_European_Studies_(CES)_is_a_multi-disciplinary_department_in_the_School_of_International_Studies_with_7_core_faculty_members_and_more_than_60_enrolled_students._The_Centre_aims_to_promote_and_enhance_understanding_and_expertise_on_Europe,_the_European_Union_(EU)_and_Indo-European/India-EU_affairs._Since_this_Centre_is_multi-disciplinary_in_nature,_teaching_and_research_are_done_by_exposing_students_to_various_social_science_subjects_with_Europe_specific_issues,_going_beyond_their_parent_disciplines._Emphasis_is_also_placed_on_developing_students’_skills_for_broad-based_theoretical_research_and_analysis.
This_is_one_of_the_new_Centers_in_the_School_of_International_Studies_which_became_functional_in_2005._The_Centre_is_an_outcome_of_the_larger_restructuring_exercise_initiated_by_the_School_in_2004._The_Centre_has_come_into_existence_as_a_result_of_the_merger_of_the_West_European_division_of_the_erstwhile_Centre_for_American_&_West_European_Studies_as_well_as_East_European_division_of_the_erstwhile_Centre_for_Russian,_Central_Asian_and_East_European_Studies._In_the_context_of_the_swift_developments_like_collapse_of_the_socialist_system_in_Eastern_Europe_and_the_ongoing_processes_of_European_integration_it_became_obvious_that_there_was_no_longer_any_compelling_reason_to_study_parts_of_Europe_separately.
Although_the_Centre_is_new,_it_draws_on_the_expertise_of_very_experienced_faculty._The_West_European_Studies_programme_at_the_School_of_International_Studies_was_one_of_the_oldest_centres_in_Asia_which_offered_advanced_teaching_and_research_programme_on_contemporary_Europe._Prof._Girija_K._Mookerjee_founded_the_European_Studies_programme_as_part_of_the_Department_of_International_Politics_and_Organization_at_the_Indian_School_of_International_Studies_(ISIS)_in_1964._He_also_founded_the_programme_at_Jawaharlal_Nehru_University_when_the_ISIS_merged_with_it_in_1971_and_West_European_Studies_acquired_the_status_of_an_autonomous_programme_in_the_CAWES.
Similarly,_the_programme_of_East_European_studies_had_been_in_existence_for_over_four_decades_in_the_School._With_changing_geo-political_realities,_this_programme_had_worked_within_the_framework_of_four_different_nomenclatures._During_the_late_fifties_and_sixties_it_was_a_part_of_the_International_Politics_and_Commonwealth_Studies_Programme_at_the_ISIS._In_the_late_sixties_it_became_part_of_Centre_for_Russian_and_East_European_Studies._In_1975_it_started_working_within_the_larger_Centre_called_Centre_for_Soviet_and_East_European_Studies._From_Soviet_disintegration_to_the_latest_restructuring,_it_functioned_within_the_Centre_for_Russian,_Central_Asian_and_East_European_Studies._The_division_has_seen_its_role_changing_from_studying_Eastern_European_countries_under_the_socialist_system_to_understanding_radical_economic_and_political_transformations_of_the_region_towards_democratic_societies_and_market_economies.
At_present_the_Centre_offers_courses_on_Research_Methodology;_European_Economic_Integration;_European_Security;_EU_in_World_Politics;_Identity_Issues_in_Europe;_Politics_and_Society_in_Central_and_Eastern_Europe;_Politics_and_Foreign_Policy_of_Germany;_Foreign_and_Security_Policy_of_the_Baltic_States;_Social_Structure_&_Dynamics_in_Europe;_Energy_Security_in_Europe;_Geopolitics_and_Regions_in_Europe;_Major_Themes_in_Contemporary_Europe;_and_Europe_and_the_Mediterranean_Region._Centre_also_offered_compulsory_courses_in_German_and_French_languages_at_MPhil/PhD_level._The_Centre_faculty_regularly_update_their_courses_by_adding_new_readings_and_is_now_in_the_process_of_extensive_revision_of_the_existing_courses_as_Ph.D_courses._
The_Centre_also_has_an_in-house_library_called_the_Erasmus_Collection_which_was_started_by_the_generous_gift_of_€_50,000_by_the_Prime_Minister_of_The_Netherlands,_H.E._Dr._Mr._Jan_Peter_Balkenende_when_he_visited_JNU_as_part_of_his_state_visit_to_India_in_2006._Prof._Ummu_Salma_Bava_coordinated_the_visit_and_library._Since_then,_many_more_volumes_have_been_added_through_special_Area_Study_grant_by_the_UGC._
In_view_of_the_growing_importance_of_European_Studies_in_India,_the_University_Grants_Commission_(UGC)_recognised_the_Centre_for_European_Studies_as_the_Centre_of_advance_studies_and_research_on_Europe_and_granted_special_assistance_under_the_Area_Studies_Programme._
The_Centre_has_pursued_projects_in_partnership_with_universities_and_research_institutions_and_think_tanks_working_on_Europe_from_around_the_world_and_aims_to_continue_building_on_this._International_and_national_academic_conferences,_workshops,_ambassadors’_roundtable_and_special_lectures_are_regularly_organized_by_the_Centre_on_matters_related_to_Europe_and_Indo-European_affairs_and_the_Centre_continues_to_do_so_in_future._A_number_of_prominent_speakers_from_academia,_politics,_diplomacy_and_media_regularly_deliver_lectures_at_the_Centre_on_European_developments._The_Centre_plans_to_sponsor_a_series_of_public_lecture_on_Europe_featuring_distinguished_speakers_from_both_India_and_Europe._
In_2018,_recognizing_the_Centre’s_work,_expertise_and_contribution_to_European_Studies_in_India,_this_Centre_has_been_awarded_the_Jean_Monnet_Centre_of_Excellence_for_European_Union_Studies_in_India_by_the_European_Commission._The_Centre_of_Excellence_is_being_coordinated_by_Prof_Gulshan_Sachdeva._The_Centre_faculty_is_recipient_of_four_Jean_Monnet_Chairs_held_by_Prof._Rajendra_K._Jain_(retired),_Prof._Bhaswati_Sarkar,_Prof._Ummu_Salma_Bava_and_Prof._Gulshan_Sachdeva._The_Centre_also_got_awarded_three_Jean_Monnet_Modules_and_four_Jean_Monnet_Networks_and_Projects_by_the_European_Commission_so_far._Faculty_members_of_the_Centre_are_part_of_committees,_boards_and_academic_bodies_both_in_India_and_abroad._Currently_the_Centre_has_74_enrolled_research_students._The_Centre_has_produced_141_MPhil_and_40_doctoral_research,_and_our_students_are_working_in_academia,_government_departments_and_thinktanks_.
