The_Chinese_programme_started_under_the_Centre_for_Afro-Asian_Languages_(CAAL)_in_1973._As_the_demand_for_the_East_Asian_languages_peaked_up,_the_Centre_for_East_Asian_Languages_(CEAL)_came_into_being_in_the_1980s,_and_the_Centre_for_Chinese_and_South_East_Asian_Studies_(CCSEAS)_in_1996. _The_CCSEAS_offers_a_full-time_three-year_B.A._(Hons.),_two-year_M.A.,_and_5_years_M.Phil/Ph.D_in_Chinese_language,_literature,_culture,_civilization_and_Sino-Indian_studies._The_Centre_offers_an_intensive_specialized_training_in_modern_Chinese_language_with_particular_emphasis_on_the_commonly_spoken_language_(putunghua)_in_present_day_China._Apart_from_having_proficiency_in_the_language,_the_students_are_gradually_exposed_to_the_cultural_and_literary_heritage_of_China_through_both_classical_and_contemporary_texts.
B.A._(Hons.)_in_Chinese:_The_courses_at_the_level_of_B.A._(Hons.)_in_Chinese_are_designed_to_develop_language_skills_in_speaking,_reading,_writing_and_comprehension._The_students_are_also_familiarized_with_various_aspects_of_life_in_China_through_courses_such_as_Read_Chinese,_Newspaper_Chinese,_Chinese_Oration/Fluent_Chinese,_General_Knowledge_of_China,_Composition_etc._The_courses_are_aimed_at_developing_competence_and_proficiency_in_spoken_as_well_as_written_Chinese_through_state-of-the-art_audio-_visual_language_laboratory_facilities_and_films._The_Centre_also_offers_four_tool_courses_in_English_for_in-_house_students_which_are_introductory_courses_about_social,_political_and_cultural_life_in_East_Asia._A_four_optional_course_on_India_and_China_is_also_offered_for_the_undergraduate_level_students_of_the_School_of_Language_Literature_and_Culture_Studies_covering_the_gamut_of_India-China_relations_from_ancient_to_contemporary_times._The_course_is_open_to_students_of_the_entire_university_as_a_non_credit_course_as_well.
M.A._in_Chinese:_The_programme_is_designed_to_facilitate_advanced_and_intensive_training_of_Chinese_language,_literature,_culture_and_civilization_on_the_one_hand_and_translation_and_interpretation_on_the_other._Courses_such_as_the_History_of_Chinese_Literature,_Introduction_to_Chinese_Language,_Fundamental_of_Chinese-English_Translation,_Newspaper_Translation,_Chinese_Novels,_Consecutive_and_Simultaneous_Interpretation,_Introduction_to_the_Economy_of_Modern_China,_China’s_political_Thought,_Reading_and_Translation_of_Contemporary_Writing_train_students_for_research_and_interpretation_careers._The_inter-disciplinary_orientation_of_the_courses_also_offers_an_opportunity_to_students_to_join_M.Phil._or_Ph.D._programmes_in_social_sciences_streams_of_other_Schools._Apart_from_having_a_practical_proficiency_in_the_language_concerned,_students_are_also_familiarized_systematically_with_various_aspects_of_life_in_China_and_other_Chinese-_speaking_areas_in_the_South-East_Asia._The_aim_of_the_programme,_therefore,_is_to_stimulate_and_facilitate_young_scholars_to_engage_themselves_in_advanced_level_language-_based_studies_on_language,_literature,_history_and_culture_of_China_and_South-East_Asian_Countries.
M.Phil._and_Ph.D._in_Chinese:_At_M.Phil._level,_the_Centre_aims_at_introducing_research_methodology_and_other_multi-disciplinary_courses._A_student_admitted_to_the_programme_is_required_to_clear_prescribed_courses_in_the_areas_like_methodology,_language,_literature,_culture,_history,_India-China_contacts_and_write_dissertation_for_completion_of_M.Phil_and_Ph.D.
