Access-Audit_for_Barrier_Free_Campus
An_Access_Audit_of_the_entire_campus_has_been_carried_out_with_a_view_to_make_academic,_administrative_and_residential_buildings_and_public_places_in_the_University_campus_accessible_for_wheel-chair_users_and_the_visually_impaired_to_facilitate_higher_education._During_the_process,_a_plethora_of_issues_pertaining_to_the_required_safety_measures_and_infrastructure_facilities_were_taken_into_consideration.
The_University_has_been_identified_as_a_model_higher_education_institution_by_the_Department_of_Disability_Affairs,_Ministry_of_Social_Justice_and_Empowerment,_Government_of_India_under_the_Scheme_for_Implementation_of_Persons_with_Disabilities_Act_(SIPDA)_with_a_sanction_of_grant-in-aid_of_Rs_8.51_Crores_approx._for_the_execution_of_the_first_phase_of_work_for_creating_a_barrier-free_environment,_facilitating_the_University_to_make_the_requisite_structural_and_other_changes_on_the_campus._Wherever_possible,_the_Equal_Opportunity_Office_has_been_assisting_the_University_in_the_activities_which_are_underway_for_creating_such_changes.
Steps_towards_creation_of_a_Barrier_Free_Environment
Though_certain_measures_(such_as_putting_special_ramps,_disabled-friendly_toilets,_etc.)_have_been_taken_earlier_in_order_to_facilitate_persons_with_disabilities,_there_remained_areas_which_necessitate_further_attention_and_improvement_to_make_the_University_accessible_for_disabled_persons._The_ongoing_activity_under_SIPDA_to_make_the_campus_barrier-free_is_a_major_effort_in_this_direction_and_to_serve_the_goal_of_making_facilities_at_the_University_accessible_for_persons_with_disabilities._Efforts_undertaken_to_facilitate_scholars/_students_with_disabilities_inter_alia_include:
Lifts
Lifts_have_already_been_installed_in_various_buildings_of_the_University_for_facilitating_the_independence_and_mobility_of_the_persons_with_disabilities._While_certain_measures_have_been_taken_in_the_past_to_make_the_lifts_accessible_to_persons_with_disabilities,_further_steps,_such_as_installation_of_Braille_Systems,_voice_systems,_etc.,_are_being_undertaken_to_make_the_lifts_more_disabled_friendly.
Toilets
A_special_measure_has_been_taken_to_provide_adequate_lights_in_the_toilets_in_the_Schools_and_the_Library_to_assist_the_students_with_low_vision._Construction_was_carried_out_in_the_toilets_on_the_ground_floors_in_Koyna_and_Shipra_hostels_to_make_them_more_disabled-friendly,_however,_certain_problems_which_are_still_being_faced_by_students_have_been_identified_and_efforts_are_underway_to_rectify_such_problems_under_the_SIPDA_scheme._Structural_modifications_in_toilets_in_other_areas_of_the_campus_are_also_underway_for_improved_accessibility_to_persons_with_disabilities.
ATMs
Two_ATMs,_touted_as_the_State_Bank_of_India's_first_'real'_disabled-friendly_ATMs,_have_been_installed_in_2012_at_the_University;_in_the_Poorvanchal_Complex_and_near_the_Central_Library_building.
Wheel_Chairs
Fourteen_wheelchairs_(including_2_wheelchairs_with_commode_and_folding_foot)_were_procured_by_the_Equal_Opportunity_Office_during_this_period_for_students_with_disabilities.
Blind_Sticks_for_Visually_Impaired_Students
A_significant_proportion_of_visually_impaired_students_pursuing_various_programs_of_studies_at_the_University_suffer_from_total_blindness._As_visually_impaired_students_typically_use_blind-sticks_for_their_mobility_on_the_campus_and_in_negotiating_their_way_outside_the_campus,_the_Equal_Opportunity_Office_purchased_fifty_good_quality_blind-sticks_from_Ramakrishna_Mission_(Kolkata)_for_distribution_among_the_visually_impaired_students_of_the_University.
Financial_Assistance_for_participation_in_International_Academic_Events
The_financial_burden_of_attending_international_events_such_as_seminars,_symposia_and_conferences_can_be_significant,_in_particular,_for_scholars_with_disabilities._In_view_of_the_fact_that_there_are_few_or_no_provisions_for_extending_financial_assistance_to_such_scholars,_including_with_the_Ministry_of_Human_Resource_Development_or_the_UGC_or_the_nodal_Department_of_Disability_Affairs,_Ministry_of_Social_Justice_&_Empowerment,_the_Equal_Opportunity_Office,_under_the_visionary_guidance_of_the_Vice_Chancellor,_has_extended_financial_assistance_to_scholars/_students_for_such_purposes_with_the_objective_of_improving_access_to_academic_events._Through_such_efforts,_four_scholars/_students_with_disabilities_(including_two_from_SC/ST_and_OBC)_pursuing_doctoral_research_in_the_University_have_been_assisted_in_their_participation_in_and_in_presenting_their_papers_at_International_Seminars/_Symposia/_Conferences._The_details_of_the_presentation_made_by_these_scholars_are_as_follows:

A_Unit_named_after_the_disability_rights_activist_Helen_Keller_(equipped_with_a_CD_and_Book_Racks)_is_instituted_at_the_ground_floor_of_the_Central_Library_building._The_it_also_provides_special_services_to_the_visually_impaired_students/_researchers_by_providing_E-Books/_Digital_Books,_apart_from_getting_scanning_works_done_for_them_on_demand._The_MAGIC_software_has_been_installed_on_5_Desktops_for_the_low_vision_students/_researchers._The_Braille_Printers_are_capable_of_printing_English_text,_graphics_and_maps_in_Braille.

Complaints_Redressal_Mechanism
The_Equal_Opportunity_Office_has_been_committed_to_fulfilling_its_mandate_of_maintaining_social_harmony_among_various_sections_of_the_University_community._Whenever_any_case_of_social_discrimination_is_brought_before_the_Equal_Opportunity_Office,_it_is_thoroughly_investigated_and_examined_and_suitable_action_is_recommended._Addressing_of_issues_related_to_any_social_discrimination_faced_by_students_or_staff_at_any_level_is_amongst_the_principal_objectives_of_the_Equal_Opportunity_Office._During_the_period_of_2012-14,_a_total_of_12_such_complaints_were_received_by_the_Equal_Opportunity_Office._The_cases_have_been_resolved_through_in-house_meetings._Equal_Opportunity_Office_wishes_success_to_all_the_students_of_Jawaharlal_Nehru_University_and_is_always_ready_to_help_theses.
